I don't know that all clinics do that. Mine just does VSG and RNY. I think MGB is pretty common in Europe, and some clinics are doing it here now...

I have a theory that since VSG is having so many issues with revision due to GERD, that Mexico is now picking up MGB as a new surgery option. But what the hell do I know? 🤣

Hopefully the future successes with MGB in Mexico will catch on here in the US.

Same concept with the lap band. It lost favor due to GERD... maybe sort of the same thing, but not to the extent of making VSG extinct which is what happened with the lap band.

VSG pretty much replaced the lapband a few years ago as the non-RNY option. It was still pretty new when I had my surgery, so I wasn't sure I wanted to go there (besides the fact I had GERD...). I was a little worried it might become "Lapband 2". I think at this point it's been around long enough to have proven itself - but yes, there do some to be a lot of people who end up revising.

I am - not "may be", am - biased, but there's no way MGB won't overtake RNY at some point. Higher weight loss, fewer complications, simpler surgery, easily revisable and reversible in study after study over a 25 year period.

Yeah same here, it was still newish. And I wasn't crazy about having part of my stomach sent to the incinerator. And I was against RNY for years because I didn't think I would be a candidate for it due to autoimmune disease, but now my Rheumy says oh no go for it. So I'm diving in head first soon.

Not that MGB was an option for me in Las Vegas, but lack of reversibility was one of the selling points for RNY for me, as I feared I would take that "out" if the going got tough. I'm an "all in" kinda guy, and I had a long row to hoe. ;)

LOL, I super don't get that. It's not like you wake up and think "oh, today I won't have bariatric surgery' - why would you do that? I can eat a full meal with MGB if I wanted to, I'll just feel satisfied a lot sooner than that. Notice I said satisfied, not "in pain".

It's awesome they can move my bypass point 50 cm in the future if need be (say, regain). Or if I need surgery on the remnant stomach, they can stitch me back up, do it, and then re-do the bypass.

I get that you don't get it. You don't need to. :)

Good luck,

To put less [apparently] catty.

We each obviously have different requirements and situations.

I had far, far, FAR more weight to lose, "Eating a full meal" obviously meant something very different to you than to me. I needed to change what "eating a full meal" meant. I wanted to change every last eating habit, other than my preferences for Protein and cheese.

I had people try to sell DS to me on much the same terms you use, "eat a full meal", "no restriction", etc. Honestly there was a large appeal to it, but I knew I could easily (EASILY) out eat any such surgery.

You may have been sure you would never wake up and decide you wanted out. I wasn't so sure, as I knew my path wouldn't take months, but years to get to goal, if in fact I ever got near it. As I said, I had a long row to hoe. When I lost 200 pounds, it was a promising start.

RNY's are often modified, not that I counted on nor cared about that option.

I am every bit as enthusiastic about my choice and my reasons as you are yours. I was once even as evangelical as you are. I've mellowed, which surprises me somewhat.

Good luck and continued success.

Tek

Yeah, as I have shared several times here, eating a full meal to me meant eating so much I physically almost passed out from my severe binge eating disorder. Which nearly killed me in the end.

I did the work. I fought and won against that demon. Not on any surgery table, that's not where eating disorders are fixed.

Am now using that knowledge to influence national health policy so fewer teenagers go down the same path and end up like I did as adults.

Let's not jump up on crosses. Because we may find everyone here has their own to bear.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
