I had VSG in November 2016. I never really lost the weight I had hoped (lost about 30 pounds). I'm sure a lot of it has to do with my choices because I really want to get the extra weight off. I recently met with my surgeon to discuss my options and after having a Bravo Endoscopy, we learned I have extremely bad acid reflux (I didn't need a procedure to learn that but whatever). He also stated that I have a hiatal hernia.

Today he advised me to undergo gastric bypass which will completely eradicate the reflux. I was hoping to go in for a duodenal switch but he stated that wasn't a good option for me.

Does anyone have any experience on vsg to rny with great weight loss results?

You're not excited about a new opportunity to lose the weight that you weren't able to with VSG? Or are you unhappy that your surgeon is recommending RNY instead of DS? My surgeon will only do DS on patients who have out of control diabetes, from what I understand.

I'm not excited because I know I'd get better weight loss with DS than with RNY. I'm shallow I guess but really wanted to lose the weight. He told me DS was an option if I only wanted weight loss but RNY would alleviate the acid reflux. I'm likely going to get the RNY but was hoping someone here could tell me that weight loss is also good with this procedure.

I see. DS is very malabsorptive, more so than RNY, so it has a much higher risk of malnutrition and the malaborption of fats hinders absorption of fat soluble Vitamins. So I guess in a surgeons mind, the benefits have to outweigh the risks, which is why my surgeon only does it on patients with poorly controlled diabetics. So patient compliance with DS surgery isn't negotiable.

I'm having revision due to GERD soon as well.

There's many RNY'ers on here that have done exceptionally well with their surgeries. I'm sure they will post about their successes soon.

You will do well with RNY if you follow your surgeons program. Best wishes!

I love humor. I actually perform stand-up on the side. Hopefully someone won't slap me in the face while on stage.

Humor on this site, is often missed. Sadly, lol. And lolol I hope you don't get Chris Rock'ed either! I think everything in life is easier dealt with if you can find humor in it. I guess not everyone feels that way. Not on this site at least.

Is MGB an option for you at that practice? The weight loss approaches DS, with fewer side effects, and there's a proven great effect with VSG-->MGB revisions.

The DS revision wouldn't do anything for your reflux, so that'd be on borrowed time anyway. The MGB could solve it.

I would like to think MGB would be an option, the surgeon is at Duke. With that said, he didn't mention it as an option. When I think 'mini,' I would assume that wouldn't be better for weight loss but I honestly don't know.

lots of people have done that revision. The thing is, like with VSG, you're going to have to change your habits and follow the program to lose the weight. The surgery will only take you so far. I lost a truckload of weight, but I worked really hard at it. And yes, the revision should at minimum improve, and will likely eradicate, the GERD.

btw - weight loss is never as strong or quick with revisions as it is with virgin surgeries, but that said, there are people who've been very successful with revisions. If you are committed, you'll get there.

I don't know that all clinics do that. Mine just does VSG and RNY. I think MGB is pretty common in Europe, and some clinics are doing it here now...

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
