Ate something the day before surgery

Recommended Posts

OMG. My surgery day is tomorrow and I am suppose to be on a liquid diet. I’m studying while my toddler is here eating grapes and he fed me a few grapes and I …..like a dummie , mindlessly ate them!!!!! I wasn’t thinking. I was so into my book. I feel like I ate about 2 or 3 but I don’t even know for sure. You think my surgeon would notice ? It’s a Sunday so I can’t even call to ask . :(

You should be ok its a tiny tiny amount. But i would just mention it. But by tomrrow those grapes should be in your colon and on their way out.

I had a complete meal for lunch the day before surgery. I was going to have a nice dinner but I just didn't feel like doing it. My Docs only rule about eating was not after 6:00pm the day before surgery. I was never on a liquid diet, but on a more rational low calorie diet.

food you ate even 12 hours before surgery is no where near the surgical field.

So a couple grapes is not the end of the world. Relax.

Good luck,

Tek

I too had a low cal diet and could eat to the night before. I have no doubt that you will be totally fine.

It was a simple small mistake. You'll be fine.

I think it will be okay but I would tell the doctor because better to have to reschedule than for it to cause some issue during surgery.

This. My surgeon said not to eat any food at all the day before the surgery because it can cause issues with the surgery and anesthesia. He said it's because anesthesia can reduce your body’s ability to protect and prevent food or acids from the stomach from entering the lungs.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
