What are you eating during the pureed phase?!

Recommended Posts

Hello all!

I'm in the pureed phase for ten more days, and I'm curious about what everyone else is eating. I've tried the ricotta bake, and I wasn't a huge fan. I made cauliflower Soup which I love but can't eat anymore this week. Ha. I've mostly just been eating yogurt, thinned-out refried Beans, smoothies, and Jello.

I don't know if my taste buds have changed, but nothing tastes very appealing anymore. I am not eating much, but I know I'm still on track with weight loss because I'm down 16 lbs.

I'm following this because this is information that will be very helpful. I've been so focused on the surgery part, (I've almost canceled but for now im still on track for March 26th). I need to focus on the diet part after surgery. Because no diet/lifestyle change before surgery ever worked lol.

Hummus. I've eaten tubs of it this week, in about half a dozen varieties. I wish I could spread it on raw veggies or crackers, but just straight from a baby spoon is fine, too.

like the above person, I ate hummus as well

as for food not being appealing, a lot of us lose our sense of hunger - and our interest in food - for up to a year post-op (a lucky few lose it forever, and I wish I had been one of those, but alas - mine came roaring back at five months out). Take full advantage of that, because it'll never in your life be easier to lose weight than it will right now - and probably for the next few months - when you're never hungry and don't give a flip about food. It all comes back for most of us, so take advantage of it while you can! Things get a lot more challenging when hunger returns!

I’m pre-surgery, but my plan is to eat a lot of Soups. Split pea Soup (my favorite) is high in Protein. Butternut squash soup is great. I’ve heard the ricotta bake is really good. Here’s a link to the recipe:

I can’t believe you didn’t like the ricotta bake. I guess we really do have different tastes. I lived on that stuff. Not sure if your team allows it but I was also allowed mashed potatoes. I guess because you are eating such a small amount it’s okay during purée phase. Basically you can purée any Soup that you like though. I mean technically you can purée anything but purée soup is less weird than purée steak dinner. I just couldn’t do the latter.

I bought a really cheap, tiny food chopper/processor and have been pureeing medium boiled eggs and add lite mayo and horseradish (or regular) mustard and it definitely hits the spot. Also been making refried Beans and thinning it with lite sour cream and take a bite of it and a bite of guacamole. Sometimes I'll add some mild hot sauce too which helps change it up a little. I also used the little food processor to chop up canned chicken even more tiny and added it to some refried beans with everything else mentioned above. Sat pretty good. I've been really enjoying the no fat green chili and lime refried beans cause they're full of flavor. You could also add plain Greek yogurt instead of sour cream but I haven't tried it yet.

Did you use egg in your ricotta bake? I've seen two different recipes with one egg and another without eggs entirely. I tried the one with an egg, and the texture wasn't my favorite.

I tried some different flavor refried beans, which has been a lifesaver!

I’m 24 days post op and I’m struggling with this stage. Refried Beans worked for a white but now they give me heartburn. I do really well with you eggs and tuna but I have to eat with a 1/2 teaspoon. I’m going to try the ricotta bake this weekend. My biggest struggle is my portion. I can’t wait until I learn what being full feels like.

I’m on my purée phase for 3 more weeks and I have to admit I’m still mostly drinking the shakes.
I didn’t like the ricotta bake after the first day and I got sick of it. Don’t want to make it again. I’m eating applesauce and about 3 bites of baked chicken when I make it chewed really well. I did have Kroger’s kickin crab salad the other day, that was good. I’m afraid to wander too far off - and I’ve been in a stall that finally moved this morning. Baked salmon was really good.  I’m liking Soups but the carbs and sodium are high so only like once every few days. Sweet and spicy tuna packet is another perfectly portioned grab.
I have the Unjury premixed Protein, love it. My dietician said we don’t have to blend the meats, just chew really well and eat slow.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
