you wont eat the same way again as in large portions... but once you are healed up and recovered you will be able to go out to eat, Eat some of the stuff you did before just smaller portions. Go on youtube and watch videos of peoples journey's through weight loss surgery. Many have videos from before, during and after surgery and even years after surgery and what they are eating and such. There are probably a hundred or so videos. Its great to see how other people do. Also make sure you fill out your sidebar with your stats and surgery you are planning on getting. It helps a ton with answering questions. you can do this in your profile tab

Coop, this is a safe space! We're all in the same boat as you or were where you are now. Sure it's easier for some than others, but you can do this. We're here for you! We will help you as much as we can. That's what this community is all about, supporting each other.

Sure eating after weight loss surgery is an adjustment, but you adjust. A lot of people say that your taste changes after surgery and you don't even enjoy the foods that you used to. As the weight starts coming off, and your clothes fit better, you realize that you've broke free from the grip that food had on you. I actually miss the restriction that my Lap Band gave me. I'm currently waiting for revision surgery. I had a Lap Band for about 8 years and had it removed last year and now almost ready to get a surgery date for gastric bypass.

Best wishes to you Coop! You got this! 💪

It’s true that you will not look at food the same way but not in a bad way. Not all but most people lose their hunger hormones for a while so it is easier to make some changes to the way you eat. You will learn to think of food more in terms of what nourishment it can provide you. It’s honestly been a good thing for me. I can still have, In moderation, the treats that I used to enjoy on occasion but for the most part I look to food in terms of energy and what it does for my body. I am one year out and I can eat anything I ate pre op though I just eat much smaller portions and I don’t have the empty calories nearly as often.

You just learned that you can ask for help, and it’s a strength. Your wife sounds like a good help too. I read “Weight Loss Surgery for Dummies “ to get started with all the lingo and comparisons of surgeries. Online YouTube videos are great too.

It looks like we’re neighbors too. I’m in Quincy. Which program did you get referred to?

there are a lot of food restrictions the first few months, but after that, there are none. That's not to say that there might be some foods you can't handle anymore - because there might be - but your clinic will lift all food restrictions once you're a few months out.

I eat pretty much the same things I ate before surgery (except for heavy, fat-laden meals), but in smaller portions than I did before.

P.S. I should add that I was a pretty healthy eater even before surgery - I just ate way too much. If you eat a lot of empty calories now - like pastries, cake, etc - then yes - that will change. But I still enjoy some of those things occasionally.

It’s ok to have doubts & fears. We’ve all had them in some way during this process. And don’t be afraid to ask questions here. We’ve either experienced the same thing or can offer support or encouragement.

My question is would you really want to go back to eating the same way? It lead you, like it did all of us, to being overweight.

Will you never eat some of your old food favourites again? Not necessarily. They may become occasional treats just not every day or every week choices. Or you discover alternatives like vegetable pastas, bun free burgers or grilled, steamed, air fried or poached foods versus deep fried. Your portion sizes will be smaller & not those portions that are 2,3 & 4 times a recommended serving size.

Of course, there will be restrictions on your food choices to begin. Initially to support your healing, then to support your weight loss & also to support your reeducation about food, nutrients, portion size, your relationship with food, etc. There may be certain foods you struggle with in the long term. Some develop intolerances like to lactose. It’s not that common & there are so many not dairy options about these days you don’t really miss out on anything. There may be foods that don’t sit as well in your tummy but it’s very individual. I still find bread, Pasta & rice too heavy & filling & char grilled meats are too dry & coarse. There may be foods you choose to avoid or reduce to maintain your weight in the future.

I still enjoy food, the flavour, the texture, etc. I go out to restaurants. I socialise with friends & family. I just make better food choices. I don’t see food & eating as a source of comfort or an emotional support to make me feel better or less bored. Food is the nutrition my body needs to function & to give me the energy to do the things I enjoy doing.

All the best.

it is overwhelming. I got cold feet for a month and was depressed. I had my RNY Nov 2021, till this day yes i look at food very diff, i think of fat, carbs, and Protein. I get afraid of how it will affect me. But its VERY easy now to say "no" yes, i dont eat bread, Pasta, rice. When i tried it, it caused such bad pain. I cant eat what i did before. Yes it changes your mind psychology, but its good

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
