Other reasons for surgery

Recommended Posts

I used to be on here back in 2012, I had the Lap Band done, but last year had to have it removed. Not sure if it was Covid or all the issues I had before and after surgery this past year but I have now ended with Gastroparesis. Or slow/ delayed emptying. My Gastro is sending me to weight loss surgery as I think he said the Bypass seems to help the problem. I fit the bill for weight loss surgery with out this issue, BMI, diabetes etc. . My question involves digestion. Does anyone know how it affects the bowels ? I don’t want to live in the bathroom . Did that almost a year Now try to eat soft foods that will digest quickly and hopefully not cause staying in the John. It seems if you only eat a cupful - it would move in a few minutes if you are missing part of your intestines. I’m not sure, I would appreciate any information on this. Thanks

I just had a bypass done 3 weeks ago. So, I'm new, but I am not in the bathroom a lot. I have 2 bm's a day. I had problems with Constipation right after surgery, but since then no issues. I haven't had to run to make it either. So, pretty normal.

Thanks. I’m pretty normal finally, but not sure how surgery would affect me.

Everyone is different. Don't worry yourself over it. It's good to be informed to make a decision. Just don't stress.

From the posts that I've read, most people stick to their plans and everything is relatively normal.

Constipation is MUCH more common than diarrhea - for both bypass and sleeve patients.

diarrhea is more an issue for people who have the duodenal switch surgery.

Thanks. It’s been a roller coaster with my digestive system for 2 1/2 years. Covid delayed care. I wonder f will still have to wait 6 mo before surgery too.

Good to know. I am waiting on the Dr appt. My GI needs to send him his notes etc. But I read a lot about dumping syndrome and not able to eat carbs or get Sick. I want to make sure I’m going to improve n not keep suffering with digestive issues.

I had my Lap Band removed last April and awaiting revision to RNY also. And yeah I'm having to do the regular pre op program with my surgeon...

Well the removal was not rushed either. I was sick, but not dying. So I guess the gastroparisis is not a life or death situation either. Unless I get a fur ball. But I’m watching it. April be a year! Sigh. Thanks.

Unless they have to do something different because of your Existing GI issues I don’t see you having more. I haven’t had any and I am a year post op.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
