Constipation - Warning TMI

Recommended Posts

Anyone had issues after surgery with really hard poop? To the point it hurts to poop, like pooping razor blades and then my bottom bleeds afterwards. Bottom only bleeds after a painful bowl movement. 3 weeks post op. Any advice?

My program recommends daily Miralax to avoid the Constipation problems. You can also ask about using Colace for softening your poop.

yea - most of us do. Chronic Constipation is very common after sleeve and bypass. A lot of us take a capful of Miralax every day to keep on top of it. Been doing it myself for almost seven years now...

I know the struggle... trust me. I almost went to the ER because the amount of blood but turns out it was from the hard stool. So long as the blood is fresh - it's likely just from the straining/hardness. This is def TMI but I reached the point of slapping on a pair of gloves and taking it out myself. Sadly this intense Constipation is common after weight loss surgery. You'll need to find a supplement and or medication routine that helps you pass things better. Try asking your care team for advice.
I have in my arsenal right now senna (smooth move) tea, milk of magnesia, psyllium husk and prune juice. I also try to each some veggies with my Protein, whatever I can stand. Make sure to drink a lot of Water and try switching up your Protein Shakes. My ensures were causing a lot of the constipation initially. Good luck. I really know the pain. It will get better eventually.

As you can see, this is very common. Best to keep on top of the Constipation to avoid the faeces compacting & thus avoiding the pain. If I had no movement after three days I’d take a stool softener & I took Benefibre every day. Keep your fluids up too. When able add some vegetables to your diet. The constipation does continue for a while. It was around my 18month mark when things started to be pretty regular again.

I am one year out and I guess I eat enough food now portion wise that I get my Fiber in naturally but Post op I struggled with constipations. I also took benefiber daily and after three days with no movement I took milk of magnesia. Luckily I only had to take the MOM once because the daily benefiber did the trick. I used the Walmart generic which is powder form so I eventually weaned myself off of that and now I am regular without it.

Even three years later I take Senna every other day or so. Just comes with the territory.

I've found that eating a good amount of nuts every day provide great Protein and fiber which helps in this. I also take a fiber in Water drink.

Aha. I eat a handful of nuts here and there too. Maybe why I was able to wean off the fiber powder. That and I try to get at least one serving of fruit.

fruit is great but I don't tolerate berries, even blended. The skins. Even on a stewed cherry, they take me down. I've been eating a lot of maracuya and chirimoya recently although they probably aren't that healthy.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
