Post Op - Effects

Recommended Posts

Hello I'm new to this group. I do have a question, I'm in my one month post op and still on my pureed phase. I know others by this time are on solid food, for some reason my bariatric Dr and nutritionist have the phases this way. However, I'm finding it really difficult to find things to eat. I didn't do well with the Greek yogurt nor with the cottage cheese. I am eating pureed Beans, tuna, eggs and broths. Lately I have been feeling really lightheaded, shaky, and really nauseated. Sometimes even weak! Have any of you felt this way. Is this something I should be concerned about.

Hey!
I'm one month post op and on soft foods. I was having really bad issues with lightheadedness. My doc ordered blood tests and it turns out I was anemic. My Vitamins didn't have Iron in them so I changed over and sure nuff it went away.

Maybe try having your levels checked. How are you doing with hydration? Do you have Low blood sugar?

Best thing to do is tell your care team if you're feeling that way.

Side note, laughing cow lite cheese, hummus and Tomato sauce with pureed yellow squash and ricotta are all excellent pureed food meals.

For many, the purée stage occurs in weeks 3 & 4 then soft food begins in week 5. But every surgeon has their own plan & some vary them according to the needs of the individual patient, their recovery, health history, etc.

You may be feeling weak from the low calories or not getting in enough nutrients & be lacking in something like Iron as @fourmonthspreop suggested. For me it was because my blood pressure was very low & I was getting the odd hypoglycaemic episodes.

Oh yeah cottage cheese is awful. Have you tried denser slow cooked Soups made from meat & vegetables & blended very well then strained. You’ll get more nutrients in that way. I was able to have instant rolled oats made on milk - make them pretty milky & runny. (The instant are more processed & less dense. I went on real ‘steel cut’ oats from the soft food stage.)

Try blending poached chicken thighs with gravy or stock. Also try blending tinned salmon or tuna with mayo or other liquid sauce. I even had some baby food a couple of times.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
