Hi,

My family and friends have do not support my surgery they want me to do it naturally. I have no one to take me to the surgery or pick me up from discharge. I asked the nurse if I could take an uber after discharge. She said to try to have someone to pick me up. 😬Just seeing what you all suggest/ ideas.

Thank You

It is naturally; you're getting a hormonal issue fixed. Are they fixing their broken bones 'naturally', too?

Anyway, just wanted to commiserate and let you know they're wrong, not you. You're doing the right thing.

In terms of transportation home; I could've easily sat in an Uber. I had surgery Thursday afternoon and was released Friday at 8am.

I was in a lot of pain immediately after surgery (most people aren't, don't worry, and I'd do it again in a heartbeat) but did fine on basic OTC pain meds from the next day. By Saturday morning (so 1.5 days after) I was out taking walks, so yeah, you can definitely manage an Uber.

If they won't let you do an Uber, can you find someone on Care.com who could pick you up? Might even be able to have them stay with you for the day if you're concerned.

I'm sorry they're not supportive. Even if they disapprove, not being there to help you out sucks.

You can definitely hire somebody to for aftercare. A lot of surgery centers have a list of local care givers who provide that service. Or you could go to an aftercare facility. I don't think you should be alone right after surgery. At least 24 hours after. If your surgery center/hospital doesn't have a list. I would call some surgery centers in your area for their list. If you have a surgery center in your area that caters to plastic surgery patient, I would try them first. A lot of their patients travel and utilize that type of service.

Thank you all so much! I am moved by the support :) :) 💕 I just made a care.com account and found someone. She responded really fast and we spoke. She is OK with picking me up super early and picking me up after surgery. The hospital is a good drive but she does not mind.

Today is my say day 1 of liquids surgery is next week! I hope this thread will help others. I'm new here too lol

Great! I'm glad to hear this. Are you on a liquid diet before surgery?

Yes. I can have yogurts, shakes broths. I'm getting the sleeve. I was set on the bypass but my doctor was concerned about my Iron levels long term. So we switched to sleeve. It's next Wednesday! 😀

I see you've already gotten some great ideas and have a ride lined up. Congratulations on your decision to have this life-changing surgery and under the difficult conditions of not having a support network around you. They don't understand that WLS is NOT THE EASY WAY OUT!!!! It's just a tool to help you make the right food and exercise choices. It's not a magic bullet that instantly takes all the weight off overnight.

One thing you may not realize - most hospitals take a long time to discharge you because they have to get all their paperwork done, and the discharge nurse has to be available. The carer may or may not be able to come into your room (depending on COVID procedures) so she may need to wait in the car. I would talk to the surgery center to confirm if she can come in.

I'm so sorry your family isn't supportive. I wish everyone could understand the necessity of this surgery, and that losing weight without surgery is basically impossible once you are significantly overweight.

I am glad you have a plan for your transportation now and that you are not letting your family stop you from continuing with this life altering journey. Hopefully they will come around in time.

I was in a similar situation in that I don't have family in the country in which I live besides my wife and young daughter. It was very difficult for my wife to be there and the hospital needed someone to stay with me that night so we paid an off duty nurse who slept on the sofa. On another note, my family also wouldn't be supportive so I didn't tell them. For me, WLS is an absolute no trainer, it's not even an argument. They should be handing it out to 20 year olds like Skittles.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
