You need to discuss this with your surgeon & dietician because there are lots of different answers & you need the one that is right for you & your needs as well as your team’s medical recommendations.

I was never given a caloric goal just Water, Protein & portion size recommendations. I’d check my calories myself out of curiosity & I was only consuming 200-300 up to solid food stage. But others are given much higher caloric goals like double & triple what I was eating. And some are given very specific macro goals - how much fat, carbs, etc. to consume each day.

Don't be afraid to ask for enough guidelines around this that you feel you need to feel comfortable about your food choices. I was fine with very few requirements but others feel safer if they’re given very precise instructions.

Most surgeons and nutritionists don't count calories. They just say, "Eat your Protein first. If full, stop. If not full, go on to veggies, then if full, stop. If not full, go on to grains." Don't get hooked on the calorie-counting game post-WLS because it doesn't work.

I agree with what everyone else said, but I will say that right away after surgery I was eating 400-500 calories a day, but it was all Protein Drinks and yogurt. Around 4 months out I was eating 900-1100 calories a day, and now at five months out, it's still basically that, although some days are higher or lower.

In my program, all types of surgeries a put on 1200 cal/day for women and 1400 cal/day for men from day 1, and latest by 6 months, this is upped to 1600 for women and 1800 for men/day.

Their reasoning is you'll lose the weight on this amount, but any lower and the body will learn to live on a very, very low amount.

I'm maintaining on around 3,000 calories a day in month 15.

My surgeon doesn't do calories either. If you're eating high quality whole foods with an emphasis on Protein, and not drinking with or an hour after your meals, you won't need to.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
