I Quit Smoking And Now I'm Struggling

Recommended Posts

Ugh.....I've done so good so far; I just don't want to undo all of my hard work! I loooooove that I've quit smoking; really I do. But I'm having a hard time following the rules now.

I haven't gained anything just yet, but dang, I can sure see how I could. My fill level is really good, but I guess it's just not good enough because I can really eat way too much.

Anybody else quit smoking and have some wonderful words of wisdom or encouragement? Maybe y'all could post your very best "I need to munch on something now or I'll surely die" foods.

I've been a non-smoker for one month now.....yay me!!!

I quit 5 months before my surgery, been a smoker for more years than I want to admit. I wanted to make sure I could do it before I had surgery. It has to be the BEST thing I have ever done for myself!!! Even more than the band. I have slipped up here and there...only having a puff or one but that is it. I refused to buy them or keep them on my person.

Hang in there and stay strong you will feel better :bounce:

When did you quit?

I quit two weeks before surgery.

That was in august.

Now I am addicted to the gym.

How did you quit?

I used chantix for a week and I stopped!

I wanted to quit so that helps as well.

You are missing that oral fixtation.

Try sugar free peppermints or candy canes.

Take deep breaths and count to ten.

I also quit smoking November 4th and was banded December 4th. I go to my doctor December 18th and if everything looks good I will get a fill. I hope so because I can eat whatever I want right now. I am still sticking to the diet of 3 meals/day and chew, chew, chew, so keep the habit going. So far I do not crave cigarettes, I am annoyed by them. My husband still smokes so it's hard in that I actually get nauseated from the smell. Try to keep focused!!!! You may try the sugar free popsicles when you feel a craving. I remind myself every time I put something in my mouth "EAT TO LIVE". don't live to eat.

Best of luck.:clap2:

I quit smoking four years ago (not by choice) when I was hospitalized for two months. Then I put on over 60 lbs. That's why I got the band.

I didn't start smoking until I was 40. I started smoking to loose weight but hey, 270 lbs later and that didn't work. I did use chantix to quit smoking. It only took one month of taking it and I was through. I am so focused on getting healthy. I do a lot of talking to myself and it seems to be working.

Keep trying and think about you, no one else. You deserve a healthy life. Remember to "EAT TO LIVE" not "Live to Eat".

Congrats to all of you who quit. I quit for like 6 weeks when I had surgery and started back. I know I can quit if I want too but I just feel I am not ready. I am planning and going to try and make up my mind for my New Years Resolution being I can't say it will be to lose weight.

I just have to say I am in awe of those of you who quit. I wish I could do it.

My doc recommended I stop smoking, but didn't require it.. thank goodness, I wouldn't have been banded!

Unfortunately, since being banded I smoke a LOT more than I did pre-band. It makes up for the food I'm not eating anymore I guess.

If you quit & got banded same time, you're amazing! Keep it up, you've come this far.

I quit Feb of this year (I was sooooo sick and could not breathe, it was the first time I was ever really scared to go to sleep, cause I did not think I would wake up!) I did not use any gum or Patches or anything but I gained 20 lbs and I would still have one here and there until my consult in August...I have not had a cigarette since...it takes a while but I do not even have cravings anymore....does not bother me anymore when someone smokes around me. THAT was my big accomplishment for the year - you can do it!!!! IT DOES GET BETTER!!!

You don't have cravings? Dang! I quit in '89 and I still want them from time to time, usually when I'm stressed out. One of my biggest fears is that I'll get my band and take up smoking again to deal with the head hunger -

Naw - I'd rather have food! :hungry: and my life is MUCH calmer...eliminated the stress and I don't have kids (yet) so...life's not so bad!

I want a cigarette and something to eat!! When I got home after surgery, I was surprised to find I didn't want a cigarette (I smoked 3-5 cigs a day). I didn't want to eat. Now, 2 weeks later, I want a cig and I want to continue my habit of grabbing food everytime I walk thru the kitchen. This forum is keeping my fingers busy.:heh:

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
