Sweet cravings post op.

Recommended Posts

I am currently 11 months out from VSG. I am starting to notice now that my hunger is coming back that I am craving sweet things. I never was a big sweet eater pre op. Most times the craving can be satisfied by a piece of fruit or some Sugar Free Chocolate but I’m just curious if anyone else noticed an increase in sweet cravings post op.

Not so much sweet but the first real craving I felt come back was carbs. It felt very much like my old pmt carb craving where I sometimes felt like I could eat a while loaf of bread, It was actually quite amusing cause you know menopausal so no pmt anymore. It only happened a couple of times. Hopefully your sweet craving will be the same & you won’t be facing a regular battle.

PS - it’s a b*tch when the hunger starts to come back. You really miss the old not hungry days.

I've always been a chocoholic for 50+ years and now suddenly I've become a savory girl. Go figure!

I never lost my hunger. I was told I would crave healthy food and would no longer like sweets. That was not true for me. I'm five months out and I still like sweets. I just usually eat things that are artificially sweetened now, and obviously smaller amounts.

I do like things like cream of wheat more now, since I'm not eating a lot of other carbs.

I just try not to beat myself up when I want things and to minimize the impact in my day. I've got to view this as something I'm going to do for the rest of my life - I can't eat zero carbs or sugar for the rest of my life for many reasons (for example, I went to my friend's house and she made a pizza. I could have brought a Protein Shake, but I'm so sick of those, so I had a piece of pizza and that was fine.).

I had bad sweet tooth cravings, but was able to get through it by eating oatmeal with some honey, or the banana fake ice cream. After about 3 months post surgery, the craving went away.

Edit to add, even if you fill a cup with the sugar free whipped topping and put it in the freezer, it settles down to a sort of ice cream consistency. Just enough to get you by without hurting anything.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
