Gas Pain post op

I'm 2 daya Post op and there's gas pains are no joke. I'm burping and passing gas but when I eat or drink the gas pain seems to get worse for a few minutes then goes away. I'm taking frequent small sips of liquid and when we eat I'm taking small bites of puree like foods Anyone experience this?

Walk. Even laps around or inside your home. Gotta get that gas moving. Gas X can help too.

I had no gas after my sleeve surgery but after my gall removal, oh, boy! Took a good 5 days for the discomfort, distended tummy & shoulder pain to reduce.

You’re on purées already? Most are on liquids for two weeks after surgery & don’t get to purées until week 3. But every plan is different. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I never understood why they cant release that gas they pump into you before closing you up.

I read somewhere that post-op gas pain lasts ~2.5 days on average. So you are almost there. Other than walking and gas-x. For the first 2 days, I tried to wait and burp after each sip of Water. And if the pain got worse, I drank and walked some more.

As @Arabesque said, most of us are on just liquids initially. I was on liquids for 2 weeks before moving on to purees 3 weeks post-op.

I worked in surgery, they do release a lot of it but some just has to absorb and get passed. Your belly is inflated like a giant balloon, it flows all around your intestines and everything else so some of it stays trapped until it’s absorbed.

Interesting. I didnt know they inflated your stomach too... I just thought they pumped air into the stomach cavity. I had a colonoscopy last year and when i woke up those pains from the air they pump in your colon was some of the worst pains i ever felt.

Yes, it goes into your abdominal cavity and not your actual stomach. I didn’t mean to be unclear.

What others have said—walk. Walk a lot. It jiggles the insides gently and allows trapped pockets of air to escape.

Don't be alarmed if you feel shoulder or chest pain, either—it's not a cardiac event, it's surgical gas rising to the top of where it can get to. If you walk it off, the gas bubble will pop. The first four or five days after surgery I made the most disgusting personal noises, walking around my tract belching and farting.

They inflate the abdominal cavity with gas so they can more clearly see where they are operating. Some of the abdominal pain you may experience is from your abdominal muscles being stretched by tbe inflation.

Well I hate to be a downer on this but, for some, you may want to just get used to it. My surgery was done almost 10 years ago and I still have gas. Good luck and I hope overcome it.
