Surgeon's advice after vomiting

Recommended Posts

I throw up sometimes from my Multivitamin despite taking it with food. My surgeon told me that if I throw up, the next day I should only have liquids to "rest my pouch". I get dizzy and hungry from only eating/drinking liquids.

Is that a common recommendation?

I've never heard that before, and it frankly doesn't sound like great advice. But I certainly am not a doctor and would not tell you to disregard your surgeon's advice. Personally, I'd try taking it at different times of day, maybe evening vs. morning, etc. Also trying taking it after your meal, maybe 30 minutes when you can drink again, instead of WITH the meal? Also might need to try a new Vitamin brand. Some folks just don't tolerate some varieties for whatever reason.

I told the nurse practitioner at my office that I threw up once from my multivitamin and she didn’t say anything about that? I would tell them how you feel on liquid diet. Maybe they would advise purées or something else given your circumstances.

I've tried so many different ways of taking this Vitamin. I've asked the nutritionist for a different option.

You may need more than just a snack in your belly. Have you tried taking it after dinner yet?? If you still get sick with that I would definitely be considering other brands.

I've tried taking it with dinner - it's even worse. It's better if I take it right before bed and then lie down.

Have you tried or considered the Bariatric Advantage chewable. It’s more expensive and I didn’t love the taste of it but I was able to take that one on an empty stomach and I was fine. My nutritionist had samples.

I tried chewables and I couldn't choke them down they were so gross. I switched at two weeks out to capsules.

Hummm… perhaps someone else can recommend a different capsule.

Thanks! I also sent a message to my nutritionist. The thing is, my labs were great last month, so I am hesitant to change it

I think as long as you find another one with the same levels of each of the key Vitamins from a reputable company you will be fine switching to another one lab wise. I just don’t know if a comparable one will also make you feel sick because it’s not clear what ingredient it is that is causing it. Hopefully the nutritionist has seen this before.

I agree that sounds weird but are you doing a full on vomit with the heaving & contracting stomach muscles or just a regurgitation (like bubbling up)? If it’s a full on vomit may be your surgeon’s advice has some merit - smaller tummy, harder on your tummy muscles???

I was so glad to say goodbye to Multivitamins once I was in maintenance - blood work showed I didn’t need to take them anymore. They made me nauseous every single day so I did the one in the morning & one at night which helped a bit. What about trying a different brand or vitamin Patches if splitting the dose hasn’t helped?

If you take a multivitamin & other Vitamins you may be doubling up on certain ones & taking more than you actually need. Iron, Vitamin C, Vitamin E, D & K are all known to cause nausea.

Now that arabesque confirmed what I was thinking that Iron could be the cause of it, maybe try the Pro Care health multi with the lower iron mg and then take a small dose of iron at another time of day.

Vomiting is so tough. I had vomiting for two months and was only recommended to return to liquid for one day in the first month.

The pharmacist recommended a slow-release Iron pill that I took separately from a multivitamin (I use Bariatric Pal capsules) that had no iron. This did the trick, maybe try it?

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

      2. BlondePatriotInCDA

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
