So I’m coming up on my three year mark. I had my gastric bypass March 27,2019. I started above 330lbs and got down to 214lbs. Found out I was pregnant a month before my one year post op. During my pregnancy I could tell my pouch was “more relaxed” to allow me to eat more to make sure my baby got what he needed. I got rid of my diabetes and high blood pressure before pregnancy and developed gestational towards the end so I was induced and I gave birth September 30, 2020 and I tried breastfeeding which made me always hungry still. I stopped because I was unable to produce but I am still so hungry. My weight has stayed at 224-227lbs since birth. But I wanted to do a pouch reset. I tried it before but my stomach would burn and I’d feel nauseous and uncomfortable. I didn’t know if anyone else has experienced that. I stopped after a couple days because it was a terrible feeling. I didn’t know if I should “push thru” it and keep going because it’s normal or not.

I think a lot of the answer lies here. Anything you do will be offset by this; eventually, your body will force you to not be hungry. On the list of survival mechanisms, it's pretty high up there.

I'd honestly take a deep breath, look at this like another project to conquer, and start by giving my team where you had the surgery a call. Maybe your new set point isn't BMI 25, maybe you're doing really well by maintaining your weight where you are. Maybe you need a revision. Maybe not.

All I know is that being permanently hungry never ends up being permanent. Fortunately.

Well, a couple of thoughts pop into my mind. One, a pouch reset involves going back to the basics of eating focusing on Protein, watching your portions, tracking everything you eat, and drinking enough Water. It's that simple. Your pouch probably is still functioning like it should. My second thought is that you're experiencing head hunger if you're hungry all the time. Boredom. Stress. Habit. That's a harder habit to kick, but you can do it by limiting yourself to 3 meals a day plus a snack.

Thank you imma stick to it this time. I just feel like I’m failing even more since the whole Covid thing starting. I’m thankful I’ve been able to stay the same even tho I feel like I eat a lot. But I wanna get below 200 at least. I only got below 200 in early pregnancy because of nausea but I felt so good at that weight even if it wasn’t my overall goal.

We will all be rooting for you, but remember: if you struggle, reach out! To people, professionals, us. And there's nothing wrong with your willpower, none of us can withstand a body that's yelling out for food. So take it easy, make one good change at a time, pat yourself on the back for being good at maintaining at your current level. That's no small feat.

Thank you so much! My Dr and his nurse (the only two people I would visit) retired recently so when I call I get rude people so I stopped contacting them. Definitely gonna come here more often. I started do it again with one small meal and the rest liquids and Protein Shakes and I’ve already lost 5lbs (probably Water weight) but with the one meal a day it helps prevent the burning sensation.

I can tell you as a woman that breast fed and produced barely enough milk, the hunger is beyond imagination. A whole large pizza with tons of toppings was one meal! The hunger was that ferocious!

Those hormones take about a year to reset and now you are evaluating your goals. I agree with the above, start with your team. Journal to weigh pros and cons of more surgery or weight loss. Honestly, after month three I realized the rest of the weight loss is entirely up to me. Surgery is not a magic bullet. Weight loss is work no matter how you do it. How hard and consistent is really up to you.

The burning and uncomfortable stomach feeling when trying to eat better sounds like my heartburn. It’s worse when I eat less, and carbs like bread “soak up the acid”. I often confuse feeling hungry with acid reflux symptoms.

Just a thought in case you haven’t considered worsening acid reflux. When I have it under control it’s much easier to eat the way I want.

I wouldn't try doing a liquid "pouch reset". There's not much evidence for that. Rather, just go back to the basics: Eat lean Protein, veggies, fruit, whole grains, lots of liquids, and make sure you're getting your Vitamins in. Most people find when they eat lean protein (chicken, fish, pork, etc) they still have restriction even after a number of years. For me, if I eat crap like pretzels or sweets, I can eat a lot, but when I eat good food like meat or even cheese, I can't eat much at all.

I do get a lot of hunger - always have - but I find it very helpful to drink warm tea all day. And @ClareLynn might be right - it could be acid reflux.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
