8oz of soup 1 week post op?

Recommended Posts

I had my gastric bypass surgery on January 4th and I’ve just transitioned to full liquids. I’m sitting here sipping my Soup, and my NUT said that I would only be able to handle 4oz or so of any food, but I’m not feeling full at all. I’m super worried about like, popping my staples or something!

EDIT: I made myself stop just because I was concerned, but what is normal?

1 week post-Op, recommended serving of Fluid for me was 125mls to 250mls (8 Oz).

So I don't think you should worry much. I think I was able to do 8 ounces too on certain occasions. And I think it's because fluids pass right through the pounch.

food on the other hand post 4 week post-Op, I can more or less tolerate about 4 to 6 ounces depending on what I eat (4 week post-Op and beyond). Solids will kick your restriction at a smaller amount while semi-solid to fluid consistency, you can tolerate a bit more.

Don't beat yourself up about it. If you could eat/sip 8 oz then you could. You're not going to stretch your stomach or pop your staples. When you transition to real foods, stop at the recommended portion sizes, but right now you're healing and you need nutrition.

Soup - unless it has a lot of solids in it - is pure liquid and will go right through you. It's not the same as eating 8 oz of real food.

Soup is basically the same as Water or a Protein Drink, unless it's very chunky. If you can drink water or Protein Shake in 8oz in a short period of time it makes sense that you'd be able to eat 8 oz of broth or similar soup. I was able to eat about that much of broth right after surgery. It's actually good to have broth Soups because the added salt can help you stay more hydrated.

You won't feel restriction until you get to more solid foods, especially things like meat. I'm 4 months out and I can only eat about 2-3 oz of meat, but I can drink a Protein shake mixed with coffee in about 20-30 minutes (it's about 24 oz).

Thank you guys so much! I know I have a little bit of hypochondria so this is super reassuring! I’ve been worried about drinking too much at one time and I’m starting to realize I’ll be okay if I don’t take a baby sip every few minutes, and just make sure I’m hydrated.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
