BumblePhee 3 Posted January 10, 2022 (edited) I had my gastric bypass surgery on January 4th and I’ve just transitioned to full liquids. I’m sitting here sipping my Soup, and my NUT said that I would only be able to handle 4oz or so of any food, but I’m not feeling full at all. I’m super worried about like, popping my staples or something! EDIT: I made myself stop just because I was concerned, but what is normal? DaisyAndSunshine 303 Posted January 10, 2022 1 week post-Op, recommended serving of Fluid for me was 125mls to 250mls (8 Oz). So I don't think you should worry much. I think I was able to do 8 ounces too on certain occasions. And I think it's because fluids pass right through the pounch. food on the other hand post 4 week post-Op, I can more or less tolerate about 4 to 6 ounces depending on what I eat (4 week post-Op and beyond). Solids will kick your restriction at a smaller amount while semi-solid to fluid consistency, you can tolerate a bit more.
GradyCat 3,695 Posted January 10, 2022 Don't beat yourself up about it. If you could eat/sip 8 oz then you could. You're not going to stretch your stomach or pop your staples. When you transition to real foods, stop at the recommended portion sizes, but right now you're healing and you need nutrition.
catwoman7 11,220 Posted January 10, 2022 Soup - unless it has a lot of solids in it - is pure liquid and will go right through you. It's not the same as eating 8 oz of real food. 2 Arabesque and lizonaplane reacted to this
lizonaplane 1,613 Posted January 10, 2022 Soup is basically the same as Water or a Protein Drink, unless it's very chunky. If you can drink water or Protein Shake in 8oz in a short period of time it makes sense that you'd be able to eat 8 oz of broth or similar soup. I was able to eat about that much of broth right after surgery. It's actually good to have broth Soups because the added salt can help you stay more hydrated. You won't feel restriction until you get to more solid foods, especially things like meat. I'm 4 months out and I can only eat about 2-3 oz of meat, but I can drink a Protein shake mixed with coffee in about 20-30 minutes (it's about 24 oz). 1 Arabesque reacted to this
BumblePhee 3 Posted January 10, 2022 Thank you guys so much! I know I have a little bit of hypochondria so this is super reassuring! I’ve been worried about drinking too much at one time and I’m starting to realize I’ll be okay if I don’t take a baby sip every few minutes, and just make sure I’m hydrated. 1 SleeverSk reacted to this
