March 2022 Surgery Buddies

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone! You all sounds to be doing great! I am so happy for all of us!!

Reading about some of the thirst issues you guys have been having, I can relate. I have found, for me, that drinking 64oz. between the hours of 9a-4p, then followed by more continuous drinking - at least 32 more ounces but preferably another 64oz in the evening - will keep your thirst at bay and your hydration meter at full. It's a lot of work if you don't establish a system for yourself to have the half gallon of Water already filled so that you don't have to math or forget how many glasses you've had, etc. During the day, I like to fill my cup with ice, then sprinkle crystal light lemonade and then fill the water. Just keep doing that on repeat.

Also, sometimes I get dry mouth when it is in the 30 minute window after eating - or worse, when I have eaten too much and cannot fathom another drop of anything - I use Biotene for dry mouth. I try to let it absorb on my mouth and throat tissues so that it doesn't add to the stomach content.

Just a few things that have helped me.

Ya I feel like I'm not quenching my thirst, I hope that feeling don't last? Maybe someone has pointers lol

You will be able to swallow more when you learn the ques your stomach gives you on fullness. I'm able to drink more now than I could before, it just took time.

How long does that take?

Using a measuring cup helped. The dietician said I needed to drink 2 - 3oz every 15 min. It seemed impossible with little sips. But I found that bigger sips helped get my Water intake in in the time frame she suggested.

Hmmmm I figured the bigger sips would make you feel full?

Shouldn't take long. Your dietician may have similar suggestions but I'd call to make sure. Crunching ice helped me too.

It does. I find that I could just spend my day filled up on Water and no real food if I didn't force myself to eat on time.

I am 10 days post-op today. The first 3 days after surgery it felt very difficult to get fluids down. I was getting worried. At my appointment with my surgeon on post op day 4 he did a barium swallow. He first asked me to drink a full medicine cup of the barium. I looked at him like he was nuts, and asked if he was sure. I mean I had only been hearing “sips only”. But, the gulp of barium went down easily and went straight past my pouch as it was supposed too. I got to see the Fluid pass thru on the screen, which helped me mentally know things were ok in my belly. Lol. My surgeon said I had likely been swallowing air when sipping which made the pouch feel full. So he advised after drinking, to keep my lips closed and forcefully swallow. I did that for a bit and now feel like I drink like I was able to before surgery.
My next post op appointment is today and I am hoping to graduate from liquids to purée. Good luck to you!

Hey peeps, just found this website and wanted to jump in. Had my VSG surgery on March 29, doing pretty good, but wow… getting my Protein in daily has become a struggle. I could probably live the rest of my life without a chocolate, iced latte or vanilla shake and be a very happy man.

been experimenting with other flavors from Bariatric Advantage and Unjury, but woof, this stuff is just hard to get down. Anyone else enjoying the whoas of protein intake?

At my center, the first two weeks post surgery is focused solely on Fluid intake. Protein is not the focus. They said the number one reason for rehospitalization after surgery is dehydration, so they don't worry about protein intake for the first two weeks.

I started puréed foods on Wednesday. What were/are your favorite puréed foods?

I’ve had mashed potatoes/gravy and eggs. Need more ideas.

I pretty much lived on hummus and applesauce during the puree stage.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
