My surgery date is February 24th, Gastric Bypass in Chicago. Finally after years 10 years of lurking, missed appts(self sabotage), and insurance changes, I made it. Just waiting to find out the date to start my liquid diet and then it really gets real. I’m getting excited but almost feel like I am trying not to be so excited because anything can happen. At this point I’m trying to tell myself it’s really about to happen and think positive. I guess with all the previous issues I’m more nervous about a cancellation or something else wacky going on and some how my surgery getting postpone. A special hello to all my surgery twins!!! We’re almost to the losers bench!

I’m the day before for an RNY. On day two of liquid diet. Best of luck!

Wow! Lots of activity as we are all getting our procedures done! I wanted to update everyone.

I had the VSG done in Mexico on 2/3/22. This was the 1st time doing Medical Tourism like this and I felt safe.

I was picked up from the San Diego airport at 7:15am and took a short ride across the boarder. My blood work was done, spoke to cardiologist, EKG, X-rays, and surgery team. I had my VSG same day (around 1ish). Protocol for this hospital is 2 nights at the hospital and 1 at a nearby hotel. While most of my surgery siblings (5 of us total per day) were up and walking hours after, I was not. I struggled a bit more. In fact, I nearly slept the entire 2 nights I was in the hospital. We were then taken to the hotel for the last night. I ordered the liquids “Bariatric tray” from room service but didn’t really touch them. The one this I made 100% sure I did was drink Water. Again, while some of my surgery siblings explored Tijuana, I slept.

I was taken back to the San Diego airport for my flight home on Sunday. I asked the airport for a wheelchair (this was a must for me!!!) hubby picked me up after my short flight back to Az.

My plan was to take Mon and Tuesday off, returning to work Wednesday. I spent Monday sleeping and Tuesday becoming more and more dehydrated all day long. Wednesday I located an IV hydration office and felt like a new woman.

A few things I have learned about my body in this process:
When I need to rest, my body will force it.
Dehydration is NO joking matter.
My pouch does not like cold liquids (took me a bit to figure this out, I am stubborn)
Pain is a sign, listen to it.

I am starting to get my full amount of liquids in now 😁 and am moving on to adding Protein. . . Slowly.

Hello all,

I just discover this forum, it is great to have a group of people sharing experiences, I found that no matter how much I thought I read about the surgery, it is different when you are living it. I had my surgery on 2/3/22 my weight was 253 I was loosing weight fast but yesterday and today I slowed down, I am 235 today but not complaining. I am having issues drinking the recommended amount of Water and since today I can have non Clear Liquids, I will have some oatmeal for breakfast, I am excited, the complication so far is that maybe one of the medicines gave me an allergy my face was all red and it was painful but that is going away now, I started working from home yesterday and sitting for long periods hurts my incisions I have to remember to stand up more often, but that was one of the contributing factors to my weigh.

Good luck to all of you who are going trough this, a friend of mine who had the same surgery keeps reminding me that it will get better soon.

I had my one week post op appointment today. I am down 16 pounds since my pre op appointment on 1/28. My doctor had me eat an egg before my appointment today to see how I tolerated it. I did okay. So, he wants me to transition to two Protein Shakes a day and one puréed “meal” (2 ounces) starting tomorrow. He really drove home the importance of 64 ounces of Water each day. (I have been hitting 48-56 a day). He said I could go back to work on Monday but to be very aware that my energy level will likely be low. So, I am pleased with the appointment and look forward to going back in a month!

So true. For the first time of perhaps my life, I had to listen to my boy and give it what it needed. The hardest part for me was recognizing the warning signs and responding before it got out of hand. I was upset that I was so physically weak and thought I was just exaggerating. I was suspicious and couldn’t trust my physical limitations yet. That changed only after I stopped fighting it and realized how exhausted I was.

Glad you’re doing better! To anyone pre or barely just post, don’t ignore your signals. Healing takes its own time and we’ll all different.

When do we start taking our Vitamins? In all the classes I took, I didn't get any instructions for that.

I was told to stop my Prenatal a week before and start it again a week after. Not told to use a chewable. Then the Calcium and b-12 are to be started at 6 weeks post op.

I'm starting my liquid diet Monday and was given gabapentin to start 3 days before and a nausea patch for the night before to keep on the day of as well.

Well I had my sleeve on Mon 2/7 . Barely any pain but had hard time with the anesthesia I also had issues keeping things down so they kept me until Friday. I had to get a little bit of steroids to decrease inflammation in my esophagus but they didn’t want to give me to much so as no interfere with healing process. It was feeling like o was swallowing a rock everytime I would try to sip Water and I was unable to keep anything down so I was surviving of of the fluids the hospital gave me. I was able to start keeping water down by Thursday. Last night was my first night home and when I drink it still bothers me some more like a pebble then a rock but definitely know it’s still inflammation. I am concerned because I have to sip so little and wait longer between just because of issues. I am only getting like a half bottle of water down with nothing else but maybe a popsicles for the entire day. I have finally stopped vomiting 🤮 because that was also an issue but I understand when people talk about foamies. My mouth out of the blue will get really moist and salty and I have to spit it out. Hopefully that will subside soon. Off to a rocky start I pray each day brings about healing and a smoother transition. Trying to remain positive.

Hi honey10604,

I am sorry you have had a difficult start, in the post operation consultation I told my dr about pain in the esophagus, I told hm, it felt like It was so closed, he said the tube they put will leave it sore for a while, even in the morning when I have not even tried to sip Water it hurts, he also told me that the omeprazole in the morning nd the night should help with this, I need to take it for at least 60 days after surgery. I then remembered I took one and had not taken more, so I am more careful with that phill and it did a big difference.

yesterday was my first day I could have 56oz of water, it is difficult, I will try warm water with drops of lime today I hope it makes it more easy to pass.

feel better soon.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
