Post op - Liquid Only - Suggestions?

Recommended Posts

Howdy everyone, wishing you a happy and healthy New Year!

What a way to start the year, today is my second day of the 14 days of no solid food, only liquid post-op diet.

I am well stocked with the "Premire Protien" shakes and a variety of "Better Than Bouillon" flavors.

I am asking those that are on this journey for suggestions and tips.

Thank you!

Yes, temperature can make a surprisingly large difference in how satisfying liquids (and solid foods) can be. When Protein Shakes are hard to get down, for example, I find them more palatable shaken with plenty of ice.

Congratulations! Our plans sound a bit different so don't go outside your team's guidelines, but here is the info I was provided for the 2 weeks. 1 word of advice, start pushing hard to get the Water in by little sips from a shot glass every day. It will take alot of effort. I downloaded a water timer and had it going off every few minutes. That will pay in dividends in 2 weeks when you can't chug water (if you are in Habit of chugging water. I'm really talking about me. Lol.) Good luck and you've got this!

That stage is pretty boring. Kinda have to just stick to your list from your team. Just sip sip

sip, try different flavors and different temperatures until you figure out what works for you.

Bone broths, consommés & strained cream Soups are good alternatives to just Protein Shakes. You can also try only the broth part of pho or wonton soups.

I found warm liquids more soothing & easy to consume too. I’d heat my chocolate shake & imagined (unsuccessfully 😉) it was hot chocolate.

Congrats on your surgery.

LOL - That's funny, I just thought about warming the shake today. I did freeze one a while back and it wasn't so bad.

I really liked getting in the Protein Shakes and for some "crunch" factor I relied on sugar-free popsicles in a variety of flavors. They were a lifesaver.

Buy a whole chicken & make your own broth!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
