Anybody else have trouble eating? I’m 4 mo post-op. I don’t have a problem digesting what I can get down but I literally start gagging when I think about eating. I’m getting my Protein and fluids in but the only way I do is still having a shake or 2. Nothing at all sounds or tastes good to me.

Just throwing some thoughts out there. First thought was an undiagnosed stricture. Or it could be a psychological block especially as you said you think you will gag when you eat so you do. Our brain is a very powerful organ. Does nothing sound or taste appetising because you can’t eat foods you used to enjoy eating & so don’t want to eat the healthier food options (low fat, low salt, low sugar, low carb) you’re encouraged to be eating now?

Honestly, I thought the shakes were the most disgusting thing I’ve every had to consume & they certainly further turned me off eating. I had them on,y because I knew I had too but bleah! I was soooo happy to stop drinking them as soon as I hit purée.

What does your surgeon say? Do you still see or have access to a therapist?

probably not a physical issue (like a stricture) since you're not having a problem digesting.

I know for the first five months or so, I was never hungry and had pretty much zero interest in food. Eating became a chore. Could it be something like that? I actually liked being that way and wished it would have gone on longer since it was so easy to lose weight when I really didn't like food and had no interest in eating.

however, if you're concerned, contact your clinic - esp if you think there's something going on other than loss of interest in food (which isn't uncommon when you're early out from surgery)

I do feel like it could possibly be something psychological but I wasn’t sure what. I know it’s not because I have it in my head I’ll lose faster if I don’t eat, I know that’s not true. I do still see a therapist, I have my 6 mo appt next month, I’ll discuss it with her. Thanks for the response!

I had this problem between the two and three month mark--mine was caused by a combination of acid reflux and some food intolerances that have since seemingly resolved themselves already. It's really important to talk to your treatment team; the suggestions and adjustments mine prescribed to me helped a LOT.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
