So I am a huge fan of spicy food given my Indian origin.

Ofc, I don't eat way too spicy but a decent amount of spice is definitely a must.

Hence I was wondering were you ever asked to restrict your spice post-Op? Or we can carry on eating spice level as we did pre-Op?

I love spicy food, too, so I hope someone responds! The spicier the better, as far as I am concerned. :)

My RNY is on Monday, so it will be a while till I can eat again.

I don't know of any plans that limit or restrict spices.

some people have a harder time tolerating spice, though - esp the first few months while they're healing. I was more sensitive to it the first couple of months out so I had to dial it back, but I've been eating spicy foods for a long time now with no issues.

I’ve been spicing up my food more than usual. I think it makes a small quantity feel like you are eating more than you are. I’m glad I haven’t been sensitive to the spice.

In the immediate aftermath of surgery, very spicy food caused me stomach pain. But at this point, coming up on 3 years, I can eat the same degree of spiciness as I could before surgery. :1312_thumbsup_tone3:

I love spicy food and regularly eat it, especially Indian food. In the first couple months after surgery when you are healing you probably want to avoid it but otherwise it should be fine.

When I was in the full liquids stage I told my doctor I was bored with eating Soup all the time so I added some hot sauce to make it taste better. He yelled at me like I was a little kid and told me to hold off on the hot sauce until 3 months out because it could cause ulcers to my healing stomach. Now, I seem to be very sensitive to spicy foods, not my stomach but my tongue. Things I used to eat before are just too "hot" for me now.

I'm engaged to a Mexican, so spice is a big part of life. For the first couple of months, I literally could not eat spicy food. I had to go back to "wypipo spicy". But it's getting a lot better. I can eat jalapeños now, and my fiancé made a salsa with chile that wasn't too much for me.

I never had an issue with spices (as in masala type spices), just chile/chilli.

But yeah, for a while I'd eat a bite of something I loved before and would suddenly be streaming tears for my eyes and moaning "ay me enchilé..."

So I have had my dietician's appt today and she's comfortable with me having spicy food as long asy stomach can handle it.

I'll be using all the Indians spices that we use on dialy basis barring I'll still go easy on the spice and gradually increase it. Don't want to throw my stomach off the hill 🤣

Other than that, all looks good so far.

Spicy food on healing stomach: not a super great idea
Spicy food once stomach is healed a few months later- give it a try, you’ll probably be fine.

I eat spicy food the same way I did pre-op. No problems here. But I was always in the “medium to low heat” category, so ymmv.

In my defense my 23 and me test confirmed that my ancestors basically just sat around eating unseasoned salted fish in Scandinavia for generations, so comparatively I’m pretty adventurous. 😬

3.5 months out, and I eat nothing but spicy if I can. It's the only luxury I really afford myself. Even my sliced cucumbers with Italian dressing, I add Tajin and Matouks. Your stomach will let you know. It really is a luxury, because even though restrictions have been lifted, there's a lot of stuff, like chicken, that I just can't stomach yet, plus we're still dependant on Protein supplements, so it's still 'restricted'. I wouldn't do it in the first couple months though.

I never did eat food that was really spicy but I can tolerate the same spice level as I could pre surgery. I didn’t try it till about three months out.

      Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
      1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

        All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

      I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
