Pain after GS surgery

Recommended Posts

pain is all across the board - some people have a lot, some of none at all. Most people experience little to no pain with these surgeries - but if you're one of the unfortunate ones who does, you'll have meds for it (they'll send you home with them). Just stay on top of it. Should only last a few days at most.

My only real pain came from the one incision spot where they pull your stomach through. And even then it wasn't a constant all day pain. Mostly just when I tried to lay back/flat/on my back or side. For the first 3-4 weeks I pretty much had to sleep semi reclined because that incision location felt like it was constantly tugging/pulling if I tried to sleep normally. Aside from what they gave me in the hospital, I think I took the pain killer at night only so that I could be as comfortable as possible when "trying" to sleep. And that was just for a few days, IIRC.

I had surgery on a Tuesday and stopped taking pain medicine on Friday. It only hurt if I put pressure on an incision and even then it hardly hurt. I walked 10 minutes most hours after surgery when I was awake to try to get the gas out.

As catwoman said pain seems to vary tremendously amongst people and I think we hear more from the people who have a lot of issues than we hear from the ones who do not. I was one of those with a pretty uneventful recovery. I didn’t even have the gas pains that most people have the first couple days (I am still not sure if my dr just didn’t use the gas on me or what). I was tired for a few days and moody but other than that I felt pretty normal. I had very little pain post surgery. I even asked them to take me off the pain rx in the hospital. They put me on Tylenol. But I know someone who had surgery a couple months before me that said she had to ask for stronger pain meds and she had the same doctor so I assume she woke up on the same pain rx as me. If you do have pain and you aren’t shy about asking they will definitely give you something to help make it manageable.

I didn’t have pain from the incisions themselves but I had lots of gas pain for 4-5 days. After that I felt pretty good.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
