Sunnyway 345 Posted December 15, 2021 My clinic allows coffee and tea from the first day after surgery. They haven't said it must be Decaf, but I can't have milk in it until I'm on full liquids so I may just pass. 1 Parishudson reacted to this
cellbell 113 Posted December 15, 2021 This is too late to be helpful for you at this point, but in case it helps future folks, my clinic had me start transitioning off caffeine two weeks before the pre-op diet, reasoning that dealing with caffeine withdrawal in addition to the normal pre-op diet issues is just too much! I was allowed coffee again after three months but everyone's program varies wildly. Talk to your surgeon's office and see what's allowed on yours. 1 catwoman7 reacted to this
Lynnlovesthebeach 626 Posted December 15, 2021 My program allows coffee, up to 2 cups per day. Even though I'm a coffee addict I didn't want it the first 2 weeks post op. 1 1 Parishudson and Sunnyway reacted to this
catwoman7 11,220 Posted December 15, 2021 like the above poster, I was also encouraged to slowly transition off caffeine before surgery - took about a month - so fortunately, i didn't have to deal with caffeine withdrawal along with everything else. and like Sunnyway said, some surgeons are OK with caffeine from the get-go. They're really all across the board on this issue. Some say you can never have it again, some say you can drink it from the start, some are OK with it once you're a ways out. So...just ask your clinic. 1 1 Parishudson and Sunnyway reacted to this
vikingbeast 987 Posted December 17, 2021 I started drinking coffee about 3 weeks post-op with no issues. BUT... I drink a tiny espresso, I don't and can't drink gallons of American sock Water. 1 1 Sunnyway and Parishudson reacted to this
ShoppGirl 5,004 Posted December 17, 2021 I don’t drink coffee but was one of the ones that was offered coffee in the hospital the next morning.

Why oh why would they do this instead of making sure patients succeed on what is already a difficult pre-op diet?
blackcatsandbaddecisions 852 Posted December 23, 2021 I had a single shot latte 3 days after surgery. I didn’t die, my stomach was fine, and honestly the warm milk was the thing that went down the easiest of everything I’d tried thus far. Your mileage may vary. My doctor didn’t really care about coffee
