My clinic allows coffee and tea from the first day after surgery. They haven't said it must be Decaf, but I can't have milk in it until I'm on full liquids so I may just pass.

This is too late to be helpful for you at this point, but in case it helps future folks, my clinic had me start transitioning off caffeine two weeks before the pre-op diet, reasoning that dealing with caffeine withdrawal in addition to the normal pre-op diet issues is just too much! I was allowed coffee again after three months but everyone's program varies wildly.

Talk to your surgeon's office and see what's allowed on yours.

My program allows coffee, up to 2 cups per day. Even though I'm a coffee addict I didn't want it the first 2 weeks post op.

like the above poster, I was also encouraged to slowly transition off caffeine before surgery - took about a month - so fortunately, i didn't have to deal with caffeine withdrawal along with everything else.

and like Sunnyway said, some surgeons are OK with caffeine from the get-go. They're really all across the board on this issue. Some say you can never have it again, some say you can drink it from the start, some are OK with it once you're a ways out. So...just ask your clinic.

I started drinking coffee about 3 weeks post-op with no issues. BUT... I drink a tiny espresso, I don't and can't drink gallons of American sock Water.

I don’t drink coffee but was one of the ones that was offered coffee in the hospital the next morning.

I am speechless that this still happens. Why oh why would they do this instead of making sure patients succeed on what is already a difficult pre-op diet? :70_poop:

I had a single shot latte 3 days after surgery. I didn’t die, my stomach was fine, and honestly the warm milk was the thing that went down the easiest of everything I’d tried thus far.

Your mileage may vary. My doctor didn’t really care about coffee

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
