GERD after nearly 3 years!!

Recommended Posts

Hi,Everyone

I haven’t posted on here before always been lurking though. I have gained a lot of knowledge from the community pre and post surgery. Recently I developed really bad heartburn and reflux(GERD). It’s almost 3 yrs since my surgery everything has been great but this brought me to my knees . It sent me to the ER. The DR put me carafate and bland diet I called my surgeon and he referred me to GI Dr., appt coming up. I was wondering if anyone here has experienced this. I’m a little scared and anxious about what’s going on. My pre-op endoscopy showed no evidence of GERD. Any info would be very helpful

Thanks

It may not be related to your surgery at all. Could be a stomach ulcer, over production of stomach acid, gall problems, or a hiatal hernia causing the reflux or reflux-like symptoms.

Do you get a bad taste in your mouth, burning in the back of your throat &/or bad hiccups or belching? (Reflux, hernia, excess acid) Do you get cutting pains across your tummy? (Excess acid, ulcer, gall issues)

Hope they find the cause & a solution for you soon.

GERD after VSG is a possible outcome, but it doesn’t effect everyone. Don’t be alarmed, your team will know what to do.

Once it’s confirmed to be GERD and not something else (like diet, etc) your team may suggest using PPI’s again and dietary changes.

Thanks everyone for the advice. My anxiety goes through the roof with health issues! I have been trying to relax. The carafate seems to be helping and bland diet too.
Again thanks for the advice.
I will try not to be such a stranger on the forum!

GERD is a possible complication of VSG, but like others have said, there could be something else causing it, too - like an ulcer or hiatal hernia. If it's GERD, it can usually be managed medically. In severe cases, converting a bypass will often cure it.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
