Hi Dcsjoc, I myself just had the sleeve surgery on 1/13/22, and I can tell you the days just prior, I was feeling second thoughts. Mine I think was a mixture of two things. One was I have already been doing great losing weight on the pre-surgery diet so maybe I don't need to do it, and the second was the feeling of loss, anger, and frustration over all the things that I will no longer be able to eat and also the amounts. I realized that both (in my case) are due to fear and control. Fear of losing comfort and wanting to control everything. I have to keep reminding myself that I did not in fact have control and to keep out of fear I have to stay in the moment and not let my head think about results and the future. I have to stay in the process and simply take it step by step. Now that I am on the post-surgery diet it's funny how much I miss the Protein Shakes. The message boards/forums here on this site have helped me so much. I hope the same for you.

Hey everyone! Scheduled for VSG on Monday and I have a question for those of you that have already had surgery. I am located in the Czech Republic and things are a little different here. I will be given IV fluids only the first couple of days. No oral intake until two days after surgery. I read how everyone wakes up so thirsty and with a sore or dry throat from being intubated. Was it bearable if you weren’t going to be allowed to drink anything? I mean, I’m doing it either way and hopefully the team at my hospital will have some suggestions for me, but I’m not excited to go through such an annoying feeling with no ability to help it. LOL

Hi I’m 4 days post op. Yes, you are thirsty and dry. The iv helps with thirst. I used some dry mouth mouthwash to swish and a spray that I didn’t swallow. My throat did hurt so I did gargle with Water a lot right after surgery but I made sure not to swallow anything. Hth good luck with your surgery and congratulations!

They have these sponge things they call lollipops that they can soak in Water and give you. I did not get them personally but my grandma has a hernia and couldn’t have water and she got them and ice chips. Also, chapstick comes in handy.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
