Hospital essentials

Recommended Posts

I'd love a list of things I need, and a list of things I won't need at the hospital. Last time was 2010, I can't remember everything. Seems like chap stick is good. A night gown and robe was not necessary, one was provided. Mouthwash, toothpaste and toothbrush. Panties, lose sweat pants and shirt to wear home. Do bypass patients stay over night? I remember someone told me to take a pillow to put between me and the seatbelt. Great advice. The pillow was also good in case I needed to cough or sneeze!!! Any more ideas?

Virtually everything was provided. Dental hygiene, personal hygiene, socks with grips on the bottom, everything.

I brought a book. I purposely didn't bring any electronics as it would have compelled me to work.

Good luck,

Tek

sounds like you've got it covered. Everything was provided for me as well - I just brought my phone and charger and some Chapstick and Biotene spray (I don't remember if I used them or not - but a lot of people do). And comfy, easy-to-put on clothes for the ride home (I just wore the same thing home that I did to the hospital).

and yes, bypass patients usually spend the night. Sleeve patients, too. I've heard of some cases where people (I think sleeve) have just been there for the day, but it doesn't sound like that's very common. I'd plan on having to spend the night there.

Thank you! I stayed one night after sleeve surgery.

Binders (girdles, lol) would have been nice for about the first week. The first cough/sneeze made me wish I had taken them up on it at the hospital!

Someone told me to have a pillow near-by for sneezing, coughing or laughing!!! I'm setting a reminder right now! Thank you!

It made my nurses smile, and a group of med students by the elevator actually laughed out loud. :)

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
