Is GERD worse in the beginning months after surgery?

Recommended Posts

I'm 2 months post-op, I'm on 80mg of pantoprazole, not on puree stage yet.

I just got off of my PICC line yesterday. It seems like for the past 1-2 weeks the GERD has gotten worse, which is also when I started drinking a regular amount. I'm only drinking gatorade zero and 2 shakes. I have so much flem and saliva now and it also hurts.

I had GERD, gastritis, and a small hernia prior to surgery.

Does it get better as time goes on? Is it just worse in the beginning months or do I need to start looking at options (revision etc)?

I'm really surprised that you were given a sleeve with pre-existing GERD and gastritis. My surgeon talked me right out of a sleeve because of mine. What did your surgeon say about it? Were you offered a choice?

he told me it would be gone after the hernia was removed. the gastritis wasn't from the GERD though. he never really mentioned bypass to me. however, I am somewhat prone to hypoglycemia which is why I didn't go for RNY, also the sleeve seemed safer for my age.

his surgical coordinator told me they told really do bypass in his office anymore

I'm a little surprised they didn't recommend the bypass, either. I was an older patient as well, but because of my GERD history, my surgeon recommended the bypass (although he said he'd do either one). I hope this gets better for you - yikes! I'm sorry to hear this.

actually i'm 18 so i was scared RNY would be too much of a responsibility especially with malnutrition and Vitamins

thank you though

I will say that I had GERD more often earlier after surgery because I wasn't yet used to how I need to eat and drink. I'd eat or drink too fast and then WHOOPS here comes the acid! Now that I know what I need to do, I only have a little bit. I think I've taken Pepcid once in a month.

You need to maybe have medications changed out for GERD and If that MD not wanting to help with Sleeve or Bypass get somebody’s else.,

For me Cov19 hit and nothing was open or working and before that I was having major issues with GERD and Sleeve issues and Never Again Use Service with Beverly Hills Physical Group in Los Angeles for Sleeve or Bypass or Plastic Surgery never again very bad place.,

things got Delayed and I find New Team of MD who know their business and Care.,

you have to get another team of MD and Education your self and drink Water by slip and eat slow and get help asap.,

How is everything going now? I am 3 1/2 months out from my sleeve and for the first time in my life, I started having HORRIBLE gerd symptoms 2 days ago. I'm uncomfortable during the day, but at night is when I'm in agony. I'm on 40mg of Omeprazole for 6 months because of the surgery, so I'm shocked this is happening. I made a post titled "Is this GERD?" because I literally have never felt anything like this before and it's freaking me out. I'm scared that if GERD is starting 3 1/2 months out from surgery, I'm going to have to be miserable for years before I can be approved for a revision. And I thought bypass was kind of the gold standard for eliminating GERD, and now I'm nervous having read a few threads on here about people getting the bypass and developing GERD after, or getting it because of GERD and it not going away.

Hi , I am 4 days out from a sleeve .I had GERD before the op but was told when they fixed my hernia it would improve .At the moment it is twice as bad as before the op .I am hoping this goes in time .I also heard bypass was better for this but I wasn't suitable for that .

Good luck x

Same here. Sleeves can often make this condition worse.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
