Drinking while eating...

Recommended Posts

I was just wondering why we are not allowed to drink while eating. Why do we have to wait 1.5 hours after we eat to drink? I know that it physically hurts to do so but will it damage the band or does it just push the food through too quickly?

They say it washes the food out of the pouch and you will get hungry faster. I have also heard that it will make you throw up.

I will sometimes take one tiny sip after I am finished eating and I have never experienced any problems, but don't pick up my bad habits!

I will be curious to hear what others have to say about this.

Denise is right. It washes the food out of pouch and you get hungry too fast. Defeats the purpose of the band. It does not make you throw up, unless you are already too full, then you might. Hope this helps. Donna

my surgeon said 1/2 hour, but each has their own guidelines.

one time i was a little fuller than i should have been, mindlessly took a BIG drink about 10 mins after eating and the tea came right back up. not a fun experience.

but it is to ensure the drink does not wash down the food.

Mine said one hour too. 1/2 hour before and 1 hour afterwards. It does make getting in all the Water a little difficult, but I like the rules that are straightforward and definitive, cause I can follow those no problem. My doc also said that sometimes the water can float the food up like a beach ball in a swimming pool and can send the food back up. UGH. I haven't wanted to experience that, so I just don't do it!

I usually do drink with meals if I am out to eat with friends. It is not going to cause you to throw up, but I do feel gasy sometimes and find myself burping if I eat and drink. By the way, I was also told I could drink soda....Diet Coke, I love it and my doc said I could drink it- it would just cause Gas, not make pouch stretch or anything.....had to get one of my vices back, quit smoking, dont eat etc..... something had to give. So far so good....slow weight loss, 30lbs from Surgery 8/10 but not at my sweet spot yet. Next fill Dec. 26th

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
