Gastric bypass and dental cleaning

Recommended Posts

Hey all!
I’m 5 weeks post op and have been doing great, but I got my teeth cleaned yesterday and haven’t been feeling well since. Usually the dentist is an easy thing for me but this time my body aches and my digestive system is definitely unhappy.
My pre-op info did not say anything about the dentist.
Has anyone else had experiences like this? Did your info have a timeline for dental cleanings?
Thanks,
Breanne

It could be coincidence, of course - I can’t imagine what the dentist could have done to you to upset your stomach. Maybe you found it extra stressful after all you’ve been through, or maybe you’re actually a little unwell. If you are concerned call your team for some advice, but otherwise I hope you’re feeling better soon!

That tooth polish has baking soda or something in it. Maybe you swallowed a significant amount and it’s upsetting your healing tummy? That’s the only thing I can think of.or like jacks123 said maybe it’s coincidence time wise and you are just coming down with something?

I agree with the others - I've never heard of that, and I've been hanging out on bariatric boards for a few years now. It's probably just a coincidence.

Thank you all for your opinion! I’m thinking coincidence now too.

Perhaps the dentist used abrasive sand that was too toxic. Some of this material gets into your esophagus and then into your stomach. That's why your stomach is having such a reaction. It could also be that you were still worried, which is also a normal body reaction. I was warned about this when I was treated by veneers kendall, FL . Typically, any procedure at the dentist's office is stressful for people because it is a place that is associated with pain and discomfort. I would like to support you and wish you a speedy recovery. Or you can go to my dentist for a consultation.

OP, Did you ever figure out what was going on? Was it the flu or something? Did it go away quickly?? It could be helpful for others in the future to hear about your experience and I have to admit I am super curious. 😉

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
