Heartburn 8 months post op bypass surgery

Recommended Posts

Hi all I had my bypass in February and all the sudden i have been dealing with horrible burning in my throat and chest. I've been taking Omeprazole 20mg twice a day and even tried adding in a pepcid complete but I'm still suffering. I also sleep elevated. I'm wondering if anyone has dealt with this. I need to have a endoscopy done.

that's odd - normally bypass improves it (if you had it before) if not totally cures it. It's not that it couldn't happen but....certainly not a common thing. I wonder if it's something like a hernia (??). It's good they're doing the endoscopy - then you'll know for sure. Sorry you're going through this!

Reach out to your surgeon. Mine told me that there's always a chance bariatric surgery could induce a severe reflux that my pcp would not be able to help, and he was adamant I call him even if it's several years down the road when it starts. I already had gerd and reflux but he was sure surgery would cure those; he really drove home that I had to call asap if i developed any again.

That is odd! I am having revision to bypass to alleviate my severe GERD so this doesn't make me feel entirely too good! I hope you find answers with you endo/contact with your surgeon, good luck!

it actually usually does alleviate it. I think the OP's case is a bit unusual...

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
