Hello .... I am cleared but waiting on my surgery date. Just looking for recommendations for the good broths during the two week pre op diet. I have to do two weeks, full liquid (protein shakes and SF jello/popsicles only). I am seriously dreading this. Any recommendations for savory broths? TIA.

My program recommended College low salt/ low fat broths. I like the chicken Bone Broth but I think any broth will do. After surgery make sure it’s Ls/LF because the fat content can bother healing tummies. Drinking warm drinks helps many after surgery.

I really liked the Swanson sipping bone broths. They come in several flavors and can be microwaved. I also LOVE Orrington Farms chicken broth Base. Its what I use in my regular cooking and makes a great broth. Some ramen an pho places will sell you a bowl of their broth, which is delicious. You can also strain broth based Soups, if any of those appeal to you.

The first couple of days are the hardest. I felt like I really turned a corner after day 3. The hunger abated, my head cleared, and I was able to sleep better. I know it feels overwhelming at first, but trust the process. You can do this!

I really liked Unjury's Protein broth (chicken flavor-ish). It was just a savory broth, but also got the protein in. If you can make your own Bone Broth, that's a win. If you can buy bone broth and add some spices to it, another win. If you go to a restaurant and get some Miso or their house broth - FANTASTIC. I found a local one (SUPER expensive but absolutely divine). Just be careful to strain, if needed.

The other thing, I think, is if you have any store bought, you might have to doctor it up. I added garlic, onion, basil... things like that. It made it more tolerable. Best wishes to you!

Honestly, go to the grocery store and buy a rotisserie chicken for dinner tonight. Keep the carcass and use it to make your own broth. It will taste better than store bought, be healthier for you and you can be precise with the sodium/spices.

I'm on the pre-op diet. Canned Swanson chicken broth is good. I add a little salt and pepper. The whole can is a serving, it's 15 or 20 calories. 1 or 2 carbs. I just got beef broth, I'm going to try it tomorrow.

What spices would you add to make it taste even better?

From a chef's perspective.

I wanted to keep things interesting. Just because I had do drink a ton of broth doesn't mean I wanted to give up flavor. These are my favorites:

Zoup Brand chicken Bone Broth (more Protein than their regular broth which is also good.) Rich rich roasted chicken flavor. Low calorie, lower than average in sodium.

Target brand Good & Gather Ramen Broth (more sodium but good caloric count) Chicken broth with good ginger and scallion flavor with a hint of toasted sesame oil.

Good & Gather Pho Broth: Same as the ramen nutritionally. Star anise, ginger and a bit of cinnamon.

For a Protein Shake replacement I can not recommend the Unjury Chicken Broth mix enough. It tastes like Mrs. Grass Soup with parsley and that really condensed chicken flavor. FYI, they also offer a chili flavor. PASS on it. It was one of my purchase regrets.

Of course, if you can make your own you it's so much better but not everyone has time for that as to do it correctly takes hours. I am in the midst of opening a gelato shop so I had no time.

Cheers

To do it right you need to slow simmer the bones for hours. Properly for over 8 hours. You season afterwords but you can do almost anything while making it. If you want a more Mexican flavor you can toss in some dried chilies. If you want Asian lemongrass, ginger, star anise, cinnamon. I like to add dill and fennel and use leeks rather than onions,

Another vote for Unjury's chicken Soup flavored Protein Powder. So yummy, savory, and satisfying. I think that you can only order it online, but it was a lifesaver for me during pre-op and post-op.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
