How many of you had diarrhea post bypass? How long did it last?

Recommended Posts

Warning: TMI.

Hi all. I had my gastric bypass on 10/6 so I am 16 days post op. I am having diarrhea to the point of incontinence and have resorted to wearing a pad to prevent any accidents. I’m so mortified. My diet has advanced to soft foods like scrambled eggs, yogurts cottage cheeses, etc. My surgeon is very liberal on advancing the post op diet. I don’t have dumping because it happens at random times. This is completely new for me. Before the surgery I had just the opposite issue and dealt with Constipation occasionally. Just wondering if anyone else had a similar problem. Thanks in advance.

no - Constipation is way more common than diarrhea - esp long-term. Some people develop lactose intolerance after surgery (sometimes temporary - sometimes not). Could it be that?

it COULD be you're one of the minority who deals with diarrhea rather than constipation - but it's probably more likely it's either a food intolerance, or it's just temporary.

No. I never experienced that. My first few weeks, moderate to severe Constipation. Now at over 2.5 months, normal with slight constipation. Maybe ask your team/surgeon.

I pray it’s temporary. I started taking lactase when I eat dairy because of the potential lactose intolerance. But still no change. My surgeon tested me for c-diff and it was negative. I would definitely prefer constipation then what aim dealing with. Today was my first day back at work and I felt like I lived in the bathroom. I even took an Imodium. Ugh

I had surprise liquid poops that bordered on incontinence until I started ground meats. I agree with others on here that you could have developed an intolerance. Sounds like you did check with your WL center. I hope it improves for you with the ground meat stage. (By the way, if you are super lactose intolerant the lactase pills won’t help much, just my experience.)

I have had the same problem, we are about the same time frame out. I am hoping it isn’t long term also. Wishing you the best.

Yes. I agree. I pray it isn’t long term. Thanks for your support! Best wishes to you as well.

Its been a few months.. it lasts until your body is completely empty. So it depends on how much you are holding. Watch your Fluid intake because everything is being released at that point when the dumping syndrome happens

For the first time in the 2 months after surgery I had the explosive runs. Only because I ate something my stomach did not agree with. My issue, don’t know if it’s an issue, everyday I take massive poops, the type that it snakes and hard to flush. I keep repeating to myself “oh no, not again” 😂😂. Wondering why, since I’m don’t eat as much, and where is all THAT comes from.

I think every what is different due to the different surgeries they have and the way they take care of themselves. Mine is the opposite I have to take something to solidify my bm or it never solid..... maybe you can do a laxative and clean yourself out and start all over again

You have to concentrate on Metamucil. Fiber that thickens the b m. oatmeal and sometimes a combination of the two in order to get together. I suffer with it and I go through bouts of being so irritated mentally. But this was part of the trade-off.

Thankfully my diarrhea has ended!!! It lasted another 5 days. I think once I transitioned to mostly solid foods that made the difference. Sooooo happy about that!!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
