shoulder pain is not gas

Recommended Posts

I am eight days out from surgery and have the same pain. I can almost guarantee it is from your surgery! There is an Australian Medical study on the internet about shoulder pain after lap band surgery and they said 66% of people had it after one week and 21% still had it after 4 weeks. Most people say it is caused by gas but the diaphram appears to be the culprit. The diaphragm gets irritated during surgery either from gas or from the actual surgery and there is a nerve that goes from the diaphragm to the shoulder. If you look at this site most people have it but the length of time and severity really varries. I have seen some people who have it for months! I will not tollerate this pain for months I can tell you! I really think that if it does not go away in a few weeks I will insist that the Doctor remove my band. I did not sign on for chronic pain when I decided to get this surgery. Good luck and hopefully your pain will soon be gone.

If the pain is from irritating the diaphram during surgery, will having more surgery to have the band removed help anything? I would think it would be even more irritated.

Just a thought. The pain was awful but it does eventually go away. Had it been weeks on end I probably would not be so nonchalant about the whole thing.

For those of you still in pain, I'm sorry.

I have heard that gas can be trapped in your body even in the shoulder area. Possibly from the anesthesia? not sure. Heating pad will help alot and eventually it will subside.

I had a massage on a cruise and she found a little bubble of gas in my shoulder although I didn't have any pain from it. Weird, this gas thing.

I am having surgery at 8 a.m. in the morning. Ready to go and hope I don't have any gas pain anywhere. I'll just keep on the pain meds and wait it out.:clap2:

I had similar pain and am now almost 3 weeks out of surgery and still have some shoulder pain on and off. I have visited a chiropractor and a massage therapist. I will be going for another massage tomorrow. It certainly seemed to help with heat and gentle stretching. They said it was either due to the position during surgery and/or wrenching of the arm. My chiropractor did say the CO2 can do nasty things to the muscles when it infiltrates.

Good luck:)

How did you resolve your shoulder pain? My PCP says it is from the anestesia and referred me back to the surgeon.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
