What to buy to prep for post op protein supplements?

Recommended Posts

Hi all! I’m about 6 weeks until surgery and I’m trying to pre-plan Protein sources, maybe even meal prep to freeze. I have tried using GENEPRO. Bought some injury today to try. Just wondering what you all would recommend to get to have for my post op period? Also wondering about if anyone did meal prep to freeze for afterwards? Just can’t think of what might be good to buy or prep and freeze ahead of time. Thanks!

I am two months post-op and I use Premier Protein/Ensure, but the 30g premade shakes. I drink one in the morning and one in the afternoon. That gets me to 60g right there. At that point, it is easy to get to at least 75 -- one packet of tuna fish will do it. The shakes are the way to guarantee that you hit your Protein goals without stressing your stomach.

Post op, I have relied on Premier Protein ready made shakes and Unjury Protein powders mixed with unsweetened soy milk.

I more sensitive to sweet tastes now, and so I really only drink the Premier Protein in vanilla especially when I need it to be on-the-go or quick and easy. During pre-op I loved the other flavors but now, not so much. Unjury tastes a lot less sweet so I prefer that now.

I remember the feeling wanting to do everything I could to prepare but I wouldn’t stock up too much. Post op many people have taste changes especially with sweet things like the Protein Shakes. (I had to give away two- 12 packs because I didn’t like them post op and hubby didn’t either). Anyways, Amazon has a variety pack of the Premier Protein that would be good to sample shakes post op. Maybe some other brands sell variety packs as well. I wish I had just stuck to those. Then you can just have shakes delivered in whatever flavor you can tolerate.

The Premier multiflavor pack is a good idea. Also, I love the Fairlife ones (they're dairy, so if that's an issue, try OWYN instead).

Post-op, I liked the Premier shakes ok. Then I went and bought a ton of Fairlife shakes (because many folks raved about them), and they made me gag. And some post-op folks can’t stand the taste of Premier. So my advice would be: don’t buy a lot of any one brand without trying them first post-op.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
