Post-Op checkup

Recommended Posts

Post-op checkup went well. I walked in and they weight me right away... from 281 day of surgery to 271 today (Dec3 - Dec11). So it looks like I lost some weight.... faint.gif

So they also measured everywhere and asked a bunch of question and told me I dont need my bandage anymore.

So the Nurse told me that I can gradually move on towards the mushy stage for about 3week.

Doctor told me that I'm doing ok and look like my first fill will be in 6weeks eek.gif . So they told me to come back in 6 weeks and also do some blood works before appointment day.

I knew my first fill wont be for like 4 weeks but.... 6 week? I hope I dont gain anything and keep loosing weight. I think once my wounds heal more then I can start walking extra and xmas coming up... which means vaction time, I should hit the gym with all that extra time.

Wow..Sounds like everythings going great so far!

Did they tell you how soon after your surgery that you could start working out?

They told me that I can start walking around while healing but anything more serious to wait after couple weeks that way most area should be healed.

Just take things slow...

I just got back from my checkup too - and also lost 10 lbs since surgery (December 3). Wahoo! He said he likes his patients to loose 15 lbs in the first month . . . so I'm in OK shape (well not physically lol). I have an appointment for January 2 for my first fill. He said he is pretty agressive . . . and we will see what happens then. He said I can do anything as long as I still feel good . . . don't overdue it. And I knew my incisions were glued shut . . .but he said "yup . . .it's a high grade super glue that is bendable and flexible" . . . amazing!

Lucky you get your fill first... even though we had surgery same day.

Well... I think as long as I keep losing weight then ill be fine with 6week wait on fill but if around Jan I stop losing then ill call doctor for a early appointment.

I just dont want to slow down and stop loosing weight and then gotta kick start again couple week later (with possible gain in meantime).

Have your doctor moved you to mushy food yet? I'm doing breakfest (protien drink), lunch (mushy), dinner (protien drink w/ popsicle)

I had my post-op appointment yesterday and have lost 11kg (about 25 lbs) since starting the pre-op diet in November.:whoo: I am allowed to start on mushies and was told that on Christmas day I can have real food -not mush - provided it is cut up into small pieces - this will make life so much easier at the in-laws.

My next appointment is January 9 and they will see if I need to have a fill. My Dr won't give a fill unless you are starting to feel hungry on what you are allowed to eat. I met a lady on Tuesday night who has now reached her goal weight and is maintaining it after12 months. In the 2 years that she has been banded she has only had 1 fill and the only thing she can't eat is white bread - I so hope that is me!!!!

Good luck all

Danna

I don't get to go to mushies until NEXT Monday . . .ugh . . . so I make sue with strained Soup and haven't been brave enough to do cream of wheat . . . I do get Jello and diet juice and popcicles . . . so I'm hangin' in there! We're on our way at last!

Wow, I don't have my post-op meeting until 12/28 (I was banded on 12/3), and I'm not sure how long after that I'll get a fill. My wife got free fills for a year but I only get them for 90 days, so I hope my Dr. is a bit more aggressive on finding that sweet spot.

My pre-op isn't until Jan. 8th and that's when they will decide if I need a fill or not. I'm thinking about going to my pcp just to have her look at things. I guess I see the upside of not going back to the bariatric center till then since I live 6 hours away, but I sort of feel like someone should check everything before that. I don't know...paranoid I guess. I just worry.

Oh, and mushies start Christmas eve! That means I can have a little good stuff for dinner! Merry Christmas to me!

How were most of you closed up?? Glue, stiches or staples. I am going to have staples (12-19-07) which I have never had. I have had 2 c-sections with dissolving stiches.

How is it to have staples removed?

They will take them out at the office with a staple remove type of device. We had the dissolving stiches and glue. Sounds like you have a lot of scare tissue to deal with.

Twilight . . . part of my instructions were to go see my PCP one week post op . . . which I did . . . and she analyzed my meds and cut my blood pressure stuff in half . . . did blood work as a base and will do again on the 31st to see if we can cut some of the other stuff out . . . so that is a good idea. She's had patients who had the surgery in the past, but I'm her "first" from recommendation through the surgery (she could be my daughter . . .) When I went to my post of .. . he just walked in the room and said "flash me" . . . and never got closer than 3 feet to looking at the incisions . . .he was into questions and answers and the future. I guess if the incisions aren't glaring at you bright red, you "pass".

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
