Hi everyone. I am two weeks postop and just started my soft foods today. Buffalo chicken dip sounded great, so I made some but not as spicy as normal. After I eat it, I was looking up about eating spicy foods after surgery and it sounds like I should not have done what I did. Do you think this will cause a problem? I’m kind of nervous that I may have damaged my stomach or something. I’m not having any pain. Thank you!

I never heard anything saying spicy food was bad. I don’t like a ton of spice but I had mild spice early out (not two weeks out, I was on real food) in like taco salad or Mexican cauliflower rice bowl and I was fine. What exactly did you read and where?

My paperwork from the Cleveland clinic says to avoid spicy foods but I didn’t see it till after.

I misinterpreted something in my paperwork and I was panicked as well. I just called my clinic and the NP assured me if I didn’t have any pain that I was fine. Maybe just give them a ring for peace of mind.

I have been eating spicy foods since three days out (Tom Yum Soup broth and Hot and Sour soup broth). I can't stand bland food. No one told me not to eat spicy food.

The reason they tell you to avoid spicy food is because it can be an irritant to the stomach lining especially right after surgery. Spicy food can also irritate gallbladder issues and cause heartburn in some people.

If you’re not in any pain and it sat well then you should be fine. If it keeps bothering you mentally you can always call your bariatric team and talk to them for reassurance.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
