Surgery scheduled for 11/1

Recommended Posts

Hi. I just found this forum. I'm starting my 2 week diet on the 18th of October, and I need advice on what to plan. I'm also struggling with knowing what needs to stop, when, and for how long. Also, concerned about the excess skin one the weight comes off.

Thanks.

Congratulations!

I would make sure you have everything in your house that you need for the first week after surgery - Protein Drinks, Vitamins, broth, etc. These are heavy and you won't be able to lift them right after surgery. Read your surgery center's directions CAREFULLY so make sure you have what you are allowed to eat.

I would also clean your house, do your dishes and laundry before surgery because lifting and bending will be hard for about a week after surgery.

Your surgery center will tell you what you need to stop (birth control pills, caffeine, carbonation, certain medications you may be taking, etc) and for how long. This should be in your packet, but if now, ask them and write it down. I found it very hard to remember everything.

Don't worry about the excess skin. That may or may not be an issue for you, and that's probably a year or more down the road. Focus on the day by day of learning how to eat again. I'm three weeks out, and trust me, that is enough to think about!

I worried incessantly about excess skin. Given all the posts about it, I think a lot of people do. But after losing all of my excess weight (over 200 lbs), I can tell you that I'd take the loose skin any day over weighing almost 400 lbs again. ANY DAY! Besides, as the above poster said, that's a year or more down the road. AND...yours may or may not be that bad. MIne was "bad", as you can imagine, but it was easy to hide in clothes. AND...there's always the option of having it surgically removed if it really drives you nuts. I would focus on other things right now...

Looks like others have covered the essentials you need. The only thing I will add is not to stick up too much with post surgery foods and Protein Shakes especially because some of our tastes change post surgery especially with sweet things. I wouldn’t worry too much about excess skin. I was worried about it but so far I am 17 pounds from goal and I have none. This is the smallest I have been in years though so I’m thinking I may get some with the last few pounds. Most people on here say that even if they got a lot of excess skin that it’s still better than being overweight. And if it’s really bad it could be covered by insurance to get it removed.

Hi everyone! I start my two-week liquid diet on Oct 19 and Surgery is on November 3. I am just now getting all the results of my bloodwork and it is nervewrecking. Did anyone else get nervous while your results were coming in?

Yes, I was nervous about everything until I woke up from surgery. And even now, three weeks post-op, I'm still nervous, but about different things. It's normal (especially if you're an anxious person by nature, or have clinical anxiety).

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
