No Restriction - VSG to RNY

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone. I was revised from VSG (Aug 2019) to RNY (Sept 2021). I was wondering if it is typical not to feel any restriction. I am 2.5 weeks post-op and I can easily consume 100g of Protein since the day I returned home from surgery which amazes me as I could not consume 100g of protein with VSG until 2 months post-op. When I get hungry, I eat and I stop when I feel I've had enough and I always measure/track so I know exactly how much I'm consuming. I never feel full. I just feel not hungry. It's difficult to explain. Is it typical not to feel restriction? When does restriction typically come or does it at all? Do you ever feel "full" as with VSG? TIA :)

Totally normal. I didn't feel restriction until I hit solid foods. I feel restriction like crazy now. I can be full from one piece of string cheese, or a small pickle... Etc. for hours. I think liquids and purees to some extent are like slider foods.

Very typical and not talked about enough. However you can still feel fullness just of a different kind. Occasionally I can still feel the VSG restriction with very solid things. But now it’s mostly a lower abdomen heaviness and disinterest in the food that warns me when I’m done. Be patient and you’ll notice your signals eventually ❤️

With RNY gastric bypass, "not hungry" is "full".

Getting a chest pain, hick-ups, or "the foamies" is a sign that your pouch is overfull or something is stuck. You can up-chuck to remove it. Regurgitation is not the same a vomiting.

Definitely don't feel the same restriction I did when I had the sleeve. I dont know if I'm just being conservative when I eat or if I truly don't have a full feeling now.

Interesting post. Happy you all shared. I have my revision from VSG to RNY bypass next week and I am so anxious to know how my body with adjust. I have terrible GERD now plus have gained and lost the same 30 pounds for 2 years. I had VSG in March 2017.

Many people say they don’t feel restriction until AFTER soft foods. Some of us though (assuming I am not the only one) are able to eat more at any given stage since the beginning of the process. According to the NP nothing is wrong and I didn’t do anything wrong my pouch is just a little bigger. I just had to measure my food and stop either when I felt satisfied or when the food was gone (I did not wait until I felt full). This had worked out fine for me. It took some getting used to, stopping before I felt full but after waiting a few minutes I realized I was satisfied anyways. Most likely you just haven’t felt your restriction because of cut nerves or because the food is not solid BUT if you are like me you will be fine too. I am almost 9 months out and I am about ten pounds from goal. Now I see you are bypass. I guess the same advice to measure and stop when you are done applies though.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
