Sleeve is tomorrow morning and I’m terrified

Recommended Posts

I will like to start of with saying Hi, I’m jazaysha. I’m a 19 year old that is 370 pound, and I’m tired of it. Ive been like this for too long every since the Risperdal lawsuit from j&j. Even though it’s been since 7th grad I was apart of that, I struggled with loosing weight. It just got worse and worse and im the biggest in my family!!

I got approved and I’m excited but what makes me super nervous is that I’m afraid that my sleeve will make me sick all the time. I have a terrible phobia about throwing up, because in the past I had a eating disorder as I struggled with the weight in the past. Now I gained a fear of just vomiting or just nausea in general. It got so bad I called my lover on the phone crying because I’m so scared.

the other fear is just my sleeve staples loosing and falling off. (I know that It’s really doubtful that happening but ya know I’m scared)

I don’t have a choice, I need to do this for me. I planned on it so much and all I want to do is this but my fear and anxiety is like a deer on a empty highway.

can anyone help me?!?!

I think most of us feel the same way you do! I was super scared of throwing up and feeling sick and I have not and I’m 4 months post op. Your fears are very normal! At the age of 19 you have sooo much ahead of you and you are saving your life now so you don’t have to fight for it later. Most ppl say their only regret is not doing it sooner so that is one regret you won’t have! Positive thoughts and enjoy your new adventure bc it will be amazing!

Jazaysha, congrats on taking this big step! You are young and have a wonderful, exciting life ahead of you! Many of us wish we had done this at an earlier age, and your courage is an inspiration to many! I was super afraid of being nauseated. I cannot take many of the common pain meds because they make me throw up. I expressed my concern to the surgeon and anesthesiologist, and they found other methods of pain management. They will give you meds for nausea before you get nauseated. Make sure you stress this ahead of surgery. Follow your bariatric team's post op nutrition plan. Your staples won’t fall out! Good luck, God bless, and let us know how you’re doing post op!

Hi, I'm newly sleeved. 9-23-2021. I was very apprehensive the day of surgery. I did not deal with nausea very much right after surgery. I was so groggy because they pumped me full of anti nausea medication and pain meds. you will want to sleep. They had my iv on full blast so I would constantly be getting up to pee. I dry heaved once when I tried to take some tylenol 3 because the pills were too big for me to take at the time. I had my surgery at a bariatric center of excellence. they took very good care of me. Be encouraged, you are starting a new phase of your life. it is well worth it. You've come this far. Stay on these forums and ask a lot of questions. You will do awesome! we are all in this together.

I had the same fear. It actually prevented me from having the procedure earlier in life. It dawned on me that your stomach is a lot smaller after surgery so not as much is coming up.

I'm currently 9 months out from gastric sleeve and have not once vomited. Key is not to over eat. Eat slow and stop before you feel full. Don't go over the recommended serving size.

You'll do great.

You’re doing the right thing. One thing my surgeon did that I would never have thought of is a seasickness patch behind my ear about an hour before surgery. It lasts 72 hours and you can buy them over the counter at any drugstore.

I had a little nausea but nothing the seasickness patch and ondansetron couldn’t fix.

I hope you're doing well! I am two weeks post-op and had many of the same fears you did especially about throwing up--I actually didnt get sick for the first week and a half post-surgery and the one time I did was completely my fault (went to bed too quickly after eating).

If you need to burp, for the first couple days it will feel like you're going to throw up, but once you pass the air it will subside. Take the antinausea meds you were prescribed and take it easy for a few days. You've earned your recovery time!

You will do fine. I am 57 and 7 days post op. I had no pain and very little gas pain. When I did have gas pain, I would shimmy shoulders until it passed. You got this dweetheart![emoji173]

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
