Hi. I am still in the post op liquid phase. Surgery was September 23. I keep hearing people talk about chest hurting. Is that a sign you've over filled your pouch or drank too fast? I'm still trying to understand what I am feeling and why.

The pain could be you releasing the gas that was used to provide better access to your stomach and intestines. As the gas leaves your body, it may cause pain in your shoulders.

Shoulder pain following LAGB surgery is common, usually affects the left shoulder, and can in some cases last 5 weeks or more.

A tightness in your chest (I always want to thump my chest when I feel it) is your restriction. It signals you’ve eaten too much, too quickly or something that is harder too swallow or digest. You won’t really feel that until you’re on more solid foods. Though I get it if I drink too quickly or too much at a time but if you’re sipping & waiting a couple of minutes between each sip you shouldn’t feel it at this stage.

Upper chest pain near & around your shoulder is from the surgical gas they use to inflate your abdomin. It lasts about a week or so.

If your pain is something different call your medical team just in case.

Thank you so much for the answers! I am so new, just trying to understand my body cues. Neither my surgeon nor my bariatric coordinator described to me what doing this or that might feel like with my new stomach.

I felt this when I had too big of a sip/gulp of liquids. It could be really painful.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
