Rebecca_in_SoCal 5 Posted September 26, 2021 I'm wondering about fried foods. Will we ever be able to tolerate fried shrimp or chicken nuggets? Wondering about Protein on the road or at a theme park. 1 GreenTealael reacted to this
Soon2bFit21 109 Posted September 26, 2021 I tolerate fried foods just fine, you just have to be extremely careful and track all your calories as they’ll add up quick. Some people can never eat fried or greasy foods without major GI upset. 1 GreenTealael reacted to this
Arabesque 7,413 Posted September 26, 2021 It is both a personal choice & whether you can tolerate it or not. I can tolerate only small amounts - air fried occasionally yes, deep fried generally no. But there is usually plenty of other food choices available. You may have to pre plan so you know which places offer more food choices & cooking style options. If you’re really stuck you can always eat the inside of battered or crumbed foods to reduce the oiliness & fat content. 1 GreenTealael reacted to this
catwoman7 11,220 Posted September 26, 2021 (edited) it depends on the person. I can't tolerate much fat/grease, even at over six years out. I went to an event three years ago catered by Cracker Barrel. Everything was swimming in grease, so I got the green Beans and one chicken breast - and I removed the breading on it before eating it. I was still in the bathroom afterwards vomiting after that meal - evidently the grease from the breading had soaked into the meat. honestly, though, fatty meals don't have much appeal for me anymore. I was at Panera bread about a week ago and noticed they have some new sandwich - macaroni & cheese between two pieces of bread. I was horrified...I can't imagine eating something like that. eating on the road hasn't been too, too challenging. If I'm stuck with only chain restaurants as choices, I'll get something like an Egg McMuffin at McDonald's (which you can now get all day), turkey chili or a salad at Panera Bread, or a grilled chicken sandwich somewhere. I also take things like Protein Bars with me when I'm on the road in case I'm "stuck" with no choices. Or you can always stop by a convenience store -they usually have things like cheesesticks, beef Jerky, and/or yogurt... P.S. as far as toleration - before surgery, my husband and I used to frequent Friday night fish fries - these normally feature a couple of pieces of deep-fried fish, tartar sauce, French fries, a roll, and cole slaw made with mayo. I couldn't eat that now. I could eat maybe half a fried fish filet. Or maybe a baked fish filet with the mayo-laden cole slaw (or a baked fish filet with some of the fries). But all of that fried/fatty stuff at once, no - my stomach couldn't handle that. GreenTealael 25,430 Posted September 26, 2021 I can tolerate all fried food just fine with one caveat - I don’t really like them anymore. #Irony 😩 1 catwoman7 reacted to this
Tomo 1,194 Posted September 26, 2021 I tolerate it just fine but I avoid it. I just recently got a mini airfryer (for 2 people) and am love with it. I love the crispy but I don't want the extra wasted calories. 1 catwoman7 reacted to this
vikingbeast 987 Posted September 26, 2021 The Protein Bar call is good. I drove across the country twice this year and discovered that nearly every truck stop and convenience store now has a rack of Protein bars... even in places where I might not have expected it (the tiny gas station in Lost Creek, WV... a tiny mom-and-pop general store along the road in the Navajo Nation...). 1 catwoman7 reacted to this

Social media pxts, tv ads, etc. just turn my tummy. Watching a football game on tv (& I hate football - not fussy don’t like any code 😉.) recently with a sleever friend & we both groaned & said yuck at the same time watching an ad for a fast food chain. We thought it was hilarious. If I’m going away for a couple of days, I pack yoghurt, Protein bars, cheese sticks, whole grain crackers, etc. to take with me just in case. I have a small thermal bag & put ice bricks in it to keep everything cold. Just refreeze the bricks overnight (ask hotel if they can be put in their freezer if travelling). You can always throw in some Protein Shakes too. Edited September 27, 2021 by Arabesque
ms.sss 15,713 Posted September 27, 2021 I have fried foods on the regular and manage just fine (btw, im 3 yrs post op). Plus i think its delicious. There was a period (i.e., during weight loss phase and some months after) that it was just unappetizing…but then again most foods were. I still have my share of “healthy” foods (i do love me some salad) but fried foods - pan fried, deep fried, whatever - are definitely common items in my menu rotations. Everyone will have different tolerances and preferences towards all kinds of food. You won’t know how you will fare until you do. Good Luck! ❤️ 1 SparklesE reacted to this
