Post surgery Mini Gastric Bypass

Recommended Posts

Just got home, and thought I'd write my experience in before I knock myself out with more painkillers.

Post op recovery was intense, but once they administered sufficient painkillers, I wasn't too bad. But this surgery is quite painful and the laparoscopic incisions look and feel like stab wounds so they're pretty tender. When my surgeon got in there, he discovered a large hiatal hernia I had no idea I had! He repaired it, so I pretty much had two surgeries for the price of one. The hernia explains the GORD, so with it fixed and the antireflux hitch stitch, I shouldn't be troubled by it long term. But I have extra abdominal tenderness from the repair as well as the Omega Loop.

The bypass went well, and I've had no trouble sipping Water to get my fluids in. Absolutely ZERO interest in food of any description, no hunger, I just have to automatically sip throughout the day. I can walk short distances.

I'm still very much needing to crawl into bed.

Oh and forgot to add: only very slight shoulder pain from the gas. It was gone by day 2. The entire surgery team was excellent.

Thanks Summerseeker! I suspect my weight loss won't begin until the swelling and Water retention goes down, as I weigh more that I did at the pre-op check despite only drinking water. So once things settle down, the weight should start to shift.

Congratulations on your surgery! I had the same shoulder pain when I got my surgery too, I’m one month post op and I can go a whole day without food cause I dont feel hunger so I forget to eat lol! The pain and tiredness gets better with time. Stay positive x

Five days post-op, so thought I'd update.

My swelling/water retention has gone and my weight's now starting to drop. I never knew my starting weight before the pre-op diet. A year ago, I was 125kg, and I KNOW I had gained a lot more in the last 12 months and am pretty sure I was at least 130kg. My hospital admission weight was 127kg, then when I got home, the Water retention and swelling had added 2kg! The scales this morning are 125kg. So It's a nice feeling to be losing at last! The slow steady march begins!

My pain is a lot better, though I'm still taking my opioids as I'm still quite sore. My wounds are healing well. When I'm in bed I have to have a pillow clutched to me abdomen as protection from a certain giant Siberian cat that loves to jump onto me. So far so good, I've managed to steer him away without denying him cuddles.

I still have zero appetite, zero hunger, and would honestly be happy to just drink water all day if I didn't have Protein goals to hit. It's slow going, but am getting shakes and protein water down no problem. Everything my partner is cooking for himself SMELLS great - even porridge. "It's gruel, Oliver!" He said, but I can't help what my nose likes! That said, I don't want to eat any of it. It's an odd thing!

I've become very sick of sweet things though. The protein water tasted nice to start with, but I've quickly become very tired of the sweetness, and even the flavoured Protein Shakes are borderline too much.

Walking every day, energy levels are good.

That is exactly where I am at post-VSG... wow, that shrimp and veggie stir fry smells amazing... OH GOD I DON'T WANT TO EAT IT. I mean, I even baked a peach tart for my daughter and didn't try any!

Agree about the sweet things... I'm so glad there's broth and strained Soup.

Yes! A texture thing perhaps. The idea of chewing solid food is just... Nooooooo! I can hear my stomach pouch warning me off. I'm a good cook, so I'm looking forward to hitting the kitchen again and whipping up Soups and blended stews for the puree stage, but anything more solid than that is a big NOPE.

I'm so jealous - I was looking forward to no longer liking sweet things and not being hungry. This has not at all been my experience. I have been hungry all the time and yogurt has been too tart even with the artificial sweetener in it. I'm hoping it improves once I get to start solid foods later today.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
