Gastric bypass take 2, update!!

Recommended Posts

Hi everybody,

Sorry I didn’t update sooner, I had a little bit of a harrowing experience. But... it’s done!!! The surgery is done!!!!

Friday morning I was the second surgery of the day. While I was in pre-op I heard the nurse telling another nurse that they were diverting the rest of the days surgeries because of no more beds. I barely eeked through. And my heart goes out to those who were canceled on, I know that devastation and anguish.

I woke up from a fairly quick surgery in a TON of pain. I had spine surgery this year, I had sterilization surgery last year, I’ve had meningitis, broken multiple bones and I’ve birthed two babies. This easily hurt more than all of that. I had iv pain management for about the first 12 hours, then was switched to oral tyelenol and norco. The second day, they noticed that my heart rate would spike every time I stood up and my blood pressure was dropping and they determined that I had a staple-line bleed. So, I needed a blood transfusion and they stopped the blood thinners that they give you to prevent clots and started me on vit k. Right around this time I started dry heaving (I had been nauseous since waking up), and I spent the entire night trying to vomit up whatever wasn’t actually in my stomach. The next day was better. My surgeon discontinued the norco because he wanted things to get moving and I was refusing oral tyelenol because I didn’t want to throw up. Even with absolutely no pain meds on board, the pain was SOOOOOOOOO much better. I was able to start eating my 1 oz portions. They kept me one more day because all of that blood that I bled had started to “pass”, don’t ask 🤢 and they wanted to check another blood count the next day. So this afternoon, after four nights in the hospital I got to come home!!!

So, it was NOT an easy process, but I would absolutely do it all again. Now I’m just settling down to recover, hydrate, and learn a whole new relationship with food.

Yikes! I'm glad you got the care you needed. Here's hoping the entire rest of your experience is smooth sailing and steady downward trend of the number on the scale.

Glad you're home and getting better! I had a complication from the blood thinner too so I know ALL about the "passing." Yeah... it was no fun. My blood pressure dropped to 70/34 and that was lying down. My hemoglobin dropped 5 pts, and I ended up with 5 units of blood and emergency surgery. Fun times, but as soon as that was done, I recovered just like I was supposed to and haven't had a problem since. I hope your continued journey is as smooth as mine has been! Good luck!

That's so scary! I'm glad they were able to find the problem and get you fixed up. Hopefully that's the hardest part of your whole journey and it's nice and easy from here!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Had a sleeve in 2017, lost over 100 pounds. Had a DS surgery this year (2025) for more sustainable weight loss. 🤞

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
