I lost 23 pounds the first month... but I was also over 300 pounds. Also, there something called the 'three week stall' that many people get in the beginning of their journey. That skipped me. There are thousands of posts about the three week stall so you can look it up if you want. You may be going through that yourself. It usually happens within the first month after surgery and can last up to 3 weeks.

I started the pre-op diet at 242 on 8/30. On the day of surgery (9/13) I was 230. This morning I was 224… I’m just hoping it continues! I’ve been like this for so long it’s kind of hard to believe that it’s working… but the stalls are VERY common, just keep at it and stay focused. You’ve got this!!

On surgery day I was 238 (18/8). Last Tuesday I was 4 weeks post op and was 220, so I lost about 18 pounds.

@DanielleMc79, it may be misleading to compare 1st month weight loss without taking into account surgery day weight (and height), as well as if a person lost a considerable amount of weight already before surgery. All these factors (and more) will affect how much a person will lose.

With that said:

I'm 5'2". Surgery Day weight was 223.2 lbs. Lost 11.8 lbs in the two weeks immediate prior to surgery on the liquid diet (no other loss before that).

At one month post, I was 201 lbs, so a total of 22.2 lbs lost (ASIDE, its funny because for the past 3 years I always thought I lost 21lbs tat first month, but I just checked my records, and looks like I've been lying all this time!!!)

How tall are YOU? Surgery Day weight?. Any weight lost before surgery?

I am 6' tall, weight 298 at the outset of this journey. I lost 20 pounds in 10 days on the pre-op liquid diet (surgery was scheduled in a cancellation spot, so my pre-op diet was shortened from 14 days to 10 days) weighing in at 277 on surgery day.

At my one week follow up, my weight was 273 - so down 4 pounds from pre-surg weight (24 from start weight). My doctor said all progress measured going forward would be from my initial weight of 298.

At my one month follow up, my weight was 265 - so 8 more pounds in 3 weeks. Honestly, I expected more and was very disappointed with that weight. When I mentioned it to my surgeon he told me that many people don't see a large loss on the scale between the 1-week and 1-month appointments, because your body is in a major metabolic flux. Your entire digestive, hormonal and endocrine system is essentially saying "WTF happened?" and shifting around trying to adjust to the "new you" on the inside and radical change in diet. His theory is that this is the cause of the notorious and dreaded week 3 stall.

So, be kind to yourself. Follow the diet your surgeon has prescribed and have faith that your body will respond in due time. It's hard when you are not seeing the big loss on the scale that you expected right away, I'm right there with you.

Try to find non-scale victories to motivate and inspire you. I had a little silent celebration when I sat in a seat in the theater last week and didn't feel the arms of the chair digging into my sides (I carry my weight in my torso area). I just sat down and didn't feel like I had to wedge myself in. The chair didn't know how many pounds I lost and the scale didn't matter one bit in that moment. It was a little thing, but I'm carrying that feeling of victory around like a mental trophy.

I lost about 19 pounds in the first month after surgery date.i think I only lost 8 pounds the first week after surgery. I had a small stall around week 6, and now the scale is moving again.

It sound like you lost a lot right after surgery, and I'm sure the scale will start moving again soon! 😁

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
