Post-op blood thinners

Recommended Posts

I had my sleeve and hernia repair done 9/13. My surgeon has me on lovenox 40mg injection twice a day for 30 days. I called the surgeon to verify this and 30 days is correct. It just seems like a long time. Did anyone else have to do this? Thanks y’all!

Post-op blood thinners are extremely common. Just like most things bariatric related, the duration varies from surgeon to surgeon. I'm scheduled for VSG next week and I believe my surgeon does 10 days. I would say if you have confirmed with your surgeon and have nothing indicating blood thinners would be unsafe (clotting disorder, etc.) the stay the course!

I had the VSG on 18/8 and had to do injections for 10 days. My hospital roommate had a gastric bypass and she had to do 30 days of injections, so it also varies per surgery. Good luck on your recovery!

I didn't have to do them at all (gastric bypass), but I know some people do. Probably depends on the surgeon - and maybe individual health/medical condition.

Injections for the first 48 hours after my sleeve but only the first 24 hours with my gall removal. Had to wear the TEDS stocking things for about 4/5days after the sleeve but only for 2 days after the gall.

All surgeons have different requirements but they would take your health history into account as well as length of surgery & what was done.

Had my sleeve completed 9/7 and my doctor has me taking Eliquis twice daily for 14 days.

It’s interesting to see how different doctors handle post op care.

I had a couple of injections in the hospital but they stopped them because I was up walking so much. At home I took Eliquis for a couple of weeks.

My practice does 10 days Lovenox post discharge for lower BMI patients, and 14 days post discharge for higher BMI patients like me. I really dreaded each and every one of those injections and celebrated when that last syringe was used.

I think the protocol used to be different, pre-COVID, but they mentioned that they'd seen an increase in unusual post-surgery clots during COVID (I'm not sure if this was just with bariatric surgeries - I assume it was just across the board for surgeries) and so they adjusted on the side of caution.

I think I was twice a day for 14.

Blood thinner shots once a day for 7 days for me after WLS.

Oh, and I also had to blow into a incentive spirometer thing they gave me 10 times every few hours for 7 days.

P.S. Now when I had my plastic surgery, I wasn't prescribed blood thinners nor did I have to blow into that thing *shrugs*. But they did put these cool automatic leg pumping compression things on (oh, I loved them) for 2 days at the hospital, and then leg compression stocking for 1 week.

Thanks everyone for the feedback. The injections aren’t that bad, just annoying.

I am now 5 days post op and started having cramping/diarrhea. I’ve only been doing Water, Protein Shakes, and sugar free pudding. I make special care to sip slowly so I am not sure what’s going on. But it can stop any time now 😑

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
