Protein Shake ???????

Recommended Posts

I bought the chocolate whey Protein and had some last night. ( surgery this friday :clap2: ). It takes really good! It reminds me a lot of Carnation instant Breakfast. It says you can make it with milk or with Water. I used non-fat milk. My husband blended some with ice and it was a great treat. Oh and I did find it at Wal Mart.

Chrisann, stay away from Slim Fast Optima--there are way too many carbs in that. Buy the Slim Fast Lo Carb--only 5 grams of carb and 2 grams of fiber--but there IS 190 calories in the 11 oz. can.

Everyone--if you're going to buy Protein powder, be sure to get whey Protein isolate and not whey protein concentrate. The isolate is pure and mixes instantly in liquid, whereas the concentrate uses lactose as a filler and must be mixed with a blender.

You should check with your nutritionist, but I remember I had trouble getting those Protein shakes in as well. My nutritionist said that was typical and that I should not force myself at that point. The Atkins Advantage shakes are good. But I still could not get them all in. The other shakes might have too much sugar in them. My nutritionist was pretty strict on the kinds of drinks she recommended. I remember Atkins was one, another was EAS drinks, and just a few others, but I don't remember Carnation.

Thanks for the suggestions. I bought several containers of Unjury and I cannot stomach it. It has a gross smell and a taste that makes me want to throw it back up. I had to throw the opened cartons out. Anyway, I will try some of these other selections. The Carnation website lists the RTD Creamy Milk chocolate as having 12g of Protein with 150 calories. That is not too bad at all. I have tried the Slim Fast Low Carb and it is okay and the numbers are good on it too.

Hi there :huggie:

Just reading this thread and thought I would throw in my 2 cents....

I see that your Dr. wants you on Protein shakes but I was wondering how long you were supposed to do them for. All Dr's are different and mine actually recommends not drinking them at all...he feels it's too easy to get used to them and once you are healed the idea of the band is *NOT* to drink any calories. I was on liquids for 2 weeks after surgery and then 2 weeks of mushies and didn't do a single Protein shake. I got some Protein from the liquids (milk, puddings made with milk, etc) and none of us are going to become sick from a lack of protein rich foods in a short time period.

Another thing you may want to be aware of... Your body can only process a certain amount of protein in 1 dose (usually between 20 and 25 grams per serving). Anything over that isn't doing you any good...in fact excess protein going thru our systems can cause stress on the kidneys...thats where its 'processed' and they don't like being over-loaded. Maybe something to talk to your Dr about and be aware of....

All the best to you all !!!!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
