Dislike my psychologist. Should I ask for a new one?

Recommended Posts

It might be a waste of time since IDEALLY, I should only have one appointment left. However the psychologist I’m seeing is a grad student with a complex who loves to schedule unnecessary follow ups. I don’t vibe with him either. I’m wondering if I should just grin and bare it possibly lie my ass off to get past this or get someone I’m comfortable with.

This is the only thing left that stands between me and meeting the surgeon. I’d like this done by the end of the year…

Don't rush through the psychological evaluation. You don't want to have to deal with binge eating or other food issues a few months after surgery and end up gaining all the weight back. If you want to find a different therapist, talk to your surgery center about your concerns, and ask for someone else, but don't lie. It's not in your best interest. You basically have one shot at this surgery and losing re-gain is not easy based on what I've read. Set yourself up for success.

Lizonaplane has a good point. I got a rubber stamp psychologist and was happy at the time but now wish I would have had someone more thorough. Post surgery I realized I have disordered eating (emotional eating and boredom eating) and I am racing the clock in therapy trying to get help before I waste this opportunity to use this tool. If you just need someone else to feel Comfortable opening up then by all means ask to see someone else but if you have to lie to get approved you may not be ready for the surgery yet. That’s not to say you Can’t be ready just not quite yet.

Therapy can be an important component of your success after surgery. I’m a huge believer in needing to be comfortable with & have trust in your therapist (doctor, surgeon, etc.). If you don’t you won’t benefit from your time with them. Will changing therapists negate the sessions you’ve already done & will you have to start from the beginning with someone new? But then if you had no real progress & are going just to tick the boxes with your current therapist maybe starting again would be better. Just some things to consider.
