Revision in Mexico?

Recommended Posts

Has anyone had any experience with having a revision done in Mexico? My insurance denied my revision AND denied my appeal against their decision. I don't have the time to continue fighting them (we want to have kids in the future and I know I will have to wait 18-24 months after the surgery to do so).

And, if anyone has any experience at Oasis of Hope in Tijuana, Mexico, please do let me know even if it wasn't for a revision!

Thank you so much!

I am pre-op, but I am having my VSG in Mexico at HospitalBC on 9/21. There is a private FB page for Dr. Illan's patients, and many of them have gone to him for revisions (Dr. Jalil Illan, MD, FACS, FASMBS Weight Loss Surgery support group). Definitely suggest joining the FB group so you can get some first hand opinions!

I did a good bit of research before deciding to go with Dr. Illan and have been extremely pleased with the process so far. Surgery in Mexico is absolutely a viable, safe option as long as you do your research and go with a reputable surgeon. Good luck on your revision, I hope you're able to find a surgeon your trust and can get it done!

I would definitely not rely on Facebook to get an idea whether or not to have surgery anywhere! Facebook is among the worse places to get information in the world. Unfortunately our society thinks Facebook is a reputeable source which explains a lot of what is going on in the world. Research elsewhere...look for BAD reviews not just good reviews to make yourself feel better about your decision.

I had my sleeve done in TJ Mexico and didn’t have an issue. When I raised concerns to my doctor in Canada he told me “Would you rather a surgeon do the surgery who does 3 a week or 2-3 a day?, find a reputable hospital and go”. 6 years later and I just had a revision to bypass but only because of GERD. After the revision surgery the surgeon took a look and said they did a good job with the initial surgery.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
